I'm actively avoiding perfection. ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏
I want to remind you not to worry about perfection. I myself am not a paragon of perfection. I drink two glasses of red wine just about every night. If I were doing things perfectly, I would drink earlier in the day to give all the alcohol enough time to “get out of my system.” But because I like to drink wine with steak (steak isn’t complete without a glass of red), and I like to eat dinner around 7, 7:30, I drink later than I “should.” I watch TV with my wife after dinner, and I don’t wear blue-blocking glasses. This is how we unwind. We’re both pretty busy during the day, so dinner and a movie is sacred time for us. No way in hell am I going to be wearing red tinted goggles. Now it’s true that the wine I drink is dry-farmed natural wine from Dry Farm Wines. Lower alcohol, no additives, higher polyphenols. It’s healthier wine that, in my experience, doesn’t interfere with sleep or give bad effects the next day. It’s also true that I spend a lot of time outside almost every day in the strong Miami sun. We all know that getting natural light before noon improves your resistance to the harms of subsequent artificial light at night. More sun during the day gives you more leeway to play. But my point is that I’m actively avoiding perfection. I’m not chasing optimal. I actively seek pleasure in almost every moment rather than deprive myself. When you’re tuned in to how your body works and what’s best for it, especially when you lay the foundation of healthy food, regular movement, and smart physical training, seeking pleasure actually gets you healthier. You’re drawn to what nourishes you. Point yourself in the right direction and everything you do seems to work better. Don’t worry so much about being perfect. Being healthy and following healthy practices makes you more resilient, not less. Agree or disagree with this philosophy? Let me know on Instagram or Facebook. |
