Let’s talk about coffee again. This is a topic that always gets people inflamed. It’s something people are passionate about in every direction. People who love coffee love it. They go to bed looking forward to that first cup. People who don’t drink coffee are very vocal about it. They’re often convinced coffee is one of the most unhealthy things you can drink, either that or they’re convinced that drinking anything habit-forming is bad. They often feel the same way about alcohol. I’m here to tell you once again, as I’ve done many times before and all the best evidence shows, that coffee truly is good for you. You can look at controlled trials in both humans and animals, where they actually give coffee to living, breathing organisms and find that their health improves. Liver fat decreases, and even the risk of diabetes drops. You can look at epidemiological studies; the more coffee a person drinks up to a certain point, the the lower their Alzheimer's risk, and the happier and more productive they are. I am honestly unaware of any serious scholarship proving or even implying that coffee is dangerous. I wouldn’t give it to kids, mind you. I would wait until they’re fully grown before they start drinking any coffee or other caffeinated beverages. I would avoid caffeinated coffee if you’re pregnant personally. But for everyone else, I see no harm in drinking coffee, and I honestly only see upside. I’ve had coffee almost every day for most of my adult life, and I’ve also spent weeks at a time not drinking any just because of circumstances, and I never noticed anything different. I didn't see any benefits to sleep or recovery or mood or energy levels. The only thing I notice is that once I start drinking coffee again, I’m happier and more productive. And I’ve done a pretty good job, all things considered. At 70 years old, I’m not saying that I am the ultimate arbiter of what’s healthy for everyone, but I am a strong indicator that coffee is probably good to drink.
