| | | | Hey folks, For today's Sunday with Sisson, I'll be answering some questions you all had about last week's edition in which I explained how I've been eating lately. 1. How do you eat all that protein in just two meals? Well for one, it's not always two meals a day. Sometimes it's three, sometimes just one. Two, a full pound of lean sirloin steak is about 135 grams of protein. A pound of NY strip steak is about 100 grams. I'm not saying I eat a pound of sirloin steak or NY strip in a sitting all the time, but it goes to show that red meat is very protein-dense. Probably denser than you realize. And a 16-ounce steak is a common meal for me. Throw in some eggs, some greek yogurt, some cheese? It's very easy to hit 140-160 grams of protein. Three, I also use protein powder and collagen peptides. Collagen is protein sparing. It may not contribute directly to muscle protein synthesis, but it contains amino acids that offset the requirement for other amino acids found in meat. 2. How do you digest all that protein? Isn't there a limit of 30 grams at each meal? No, there's no real limit. While the initial "absorption" runs around 30-40 grams, it's not like the rest is wasted. It just gets absorbed more slowly, later on down the line. In fact, the presence of protein in the digestive tract actually slows things down so your body has more time to absorb the protein over the course of the day. 3. How much red meat are you eating? Aren't you worried it's too much? Red meat is fine to eat regularly, and it’s probably the major source of protein in my diet, but it’s important to branch out too. I eat a good amount of pork, salmon, shrimp, eggs, and I love a good roast chicken. 4. Sugar in your coffee, Sisson??? Yes. I've always taken a spoonful of sugar in my coffee to cut the bitterness, and people always freak out whenever they hear it, and I'm not going to stop doing it. The actual sugar intake is negligible—5-7 grams or so—and even if it were an issue, I have the metabolic flexibility to handle it. And so do you, I bet. 5. No more Big Ass Salads?? I just didn't feel the need for all that roughage anymore. It was filling me up with water and fiber, becoming a major sponge for dressing—which I love, but I was getting too full and not eating enough protein as a result. The Big Ass Salad is still a great choice for most people. Don't let me stop you. It just doesn't align with my goals anymore. As I said, I'll still have a plain, simple romaine salad for the crunch and acid to contrast with the meat. Take care, everyone. If you have any more questions or comments, drop them in the comment section of this week's New and Noteworthy. |
