| | SUMMER 2025 | | | | Summer is here! As we welcome the warmth and energy of the season, it’s a perfect time to slow down and embrace practices that support resilience, self-care, and meaningful connection. In this issue, we highlight a new research study aimed at improving brain health in survivors of hematological cancers. We also introduce our recent integrative medicine fellows and celebrate the many ways they’ve enriched our program this year. You’ll learn how exercise can help strengthen bones, explore the latest research on the traditional Chinese medicine formula Sheng Mai Yin, and find details about our upcoming workshops and educational series. Let’s move through this season with intention and well-being—together.

| | | New Study Examines Telehealth Music Therapy for Brain Health
| Nearly one-third of survivors of lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma have trouble with memory and concentration on daily tasks after completing cancer treatment. This condition, cancer-related cognitive dysfunction (CRCD), can negatively affect quality of life, and treatment options are limited. Now, a new study, called PRELUDE, will investigate whether music therapy is a promising approach to improving brain function in this population of cancer survivors. | |

| | About Herbs: Sheng Mai Yin
| | Sheng Mai Yin (SMY) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula made up of three different herbs. It has been historically used to treat fatigue and cardiovascular disease. Current evidence suggests benefits of SMY in the treatment of heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), coronary heart disease, viral inflammation of the heart muscle, and damage or problems with the heart from certain chemotherapy medications. Visit the About Herbs website or download the About Herbs app (available for Android via Google Play and iOS via the App Store).

| | | IMS Insights: Exercise for Strong Bones | | Cancer and its treatments can weaken bones and increase the risk of osteoporosis, a condition in which reduced bone density compromises bone strength. A reduced activity level from surgery, being bedbound, or feeling too weak to exercise can reduce bone density and muscle mass. However, because bone is living tissue, bone loss from a medication or treatment can often be improved with the right exercise and nutrition—something many people don’t realize.
