Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Strengthening Our Alliances As member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I was honored to meet with Australia's Ambassador to the U.S. Kevin Rudd. Strengthening our alliance is critical as we face growing threats on the world stage, particularly from the People's Republic of China. This week’s meeting was an opportunity to discuss our shared challenges and strive to foster an open and secure Indo-Pacific, free from Chinese aggression. Taking Insurance Reform Local This week, the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, & Urban Affairs held a hearing on recent trends in the property insurance market and their impact on consumers. As Ranking Member, I stressed the need to make sure Americans have access to fair and competitive local insurance markets. In some states, overregulation and bad policies are hurting Americans already struggling to make ends meet. I spent years working as an insurance agent, eventually running my own business. I know these issues are best handled on the state level. That’s why I called for local solutions to increase competition and affordability for Americans across the country. Watch my opening statement here. Standing Against Student Loan Bailouts In June, the Supreme Court struck down the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness plan, which would have cost taxpayers over $400 billion. In response, the White House is now attempting an even larger plan to transfer student debt onto hardworking Americans. This latest scheme would transfer the burden of $559 billion in federal student loans from those who willingly took out those loans onto Americans who chose not to go to college or already worked hard to pay their debts. This week, I joined my Senate colleagues in introducing a resolution under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to stop this reckless and unfair action. Americans already struggling with inflation and high prices cannot afford to shoulder the additional burden of billions in debt. Read more about our efforts here. Celebrating South Carolina’s Economic Giants During Team Scott’s recent tour of the Michelin facility in South Carolina, they got a glimpse of the great work Michelin is doing in the Palmetto State. Michelin’s US10 Facility in Starr, South Carolina, produces Earthmover tires right here in the Upstate. We’re blessed with vibrant businesses that bring opportunities to folks across the state! Spilling the #SCSweetTea on Sending South Carolinians Across the World When the Rhodes family from Mount Pleasant called my office to assist them with passport delays, we were able to help their daughter make it to Sweden and represent the United States in the world’s largest youth soccer tournament. It’s a blessing to serve South Carolinians like this every single day! Sincerely, |
