Benefits of Storytime
Storytimes are so much fun! More importantly, these programs have been carefully developed to encourage excitement about reading and develop early literacy skills. The librarians who present storytime for children of all ages are trained in the elements of early literacy: reading, writing, singing, playing, and talking. 

While it is very important to have books at home and share them with your child, there are lots of benefits to storytime at the Library. Children can watch other children get engaged in a story and are exposed to a wider variety of authors, writing styles, and illustrations. For many kids, storytime is their first group experience prior to school or preschool, so school readiness skills such as how to sit for an extended period of time, how to pay attention to an adult other than a parent, how to take turns, how to share, and how to be reasonably quiet in a public place are developed, making future school success more likely.

Storytimes benefit parents, too! It is a great way to learn new strategies for engaging your child in reading and other literacy-based activities. Activities in storytimes offer parents new skills to support a child’s learning, and parents can also see developmentally appropriate materials in action for their child’s age group.

All storytimes offered at the Library are free and open to the public. Our 6-week storytime sessions start this week (10/23), so we hope to see you there! Please register under the appropriate age group below.
