Things to stream when you feel like there's nothing to left to watch
I have about 50 million direct debits for different streaming services.
And yet, I frequently find myself flicking through them all, unable to land on something that feels good enough to watch. When it becomes too overwhelming, I settle for a series I’ve watched more times than I can count so at least something is on.
Sound familiar? This is actually a thing. It’s called “show-verload”, and it’s a problem!
To help you overcome your show-verload, I’ve gone deep into the ABC iview catalogue to curate a list of shows and films to consider when you feel like you’ve seen everything old everywhere else, and nothing new looks good. Did I mention they were free, because ABC iview is free?
First up we have Talking Heads, which I would describe as a fancy grownup show one would watch while nibbling on, like, a cheese platter, and delicately sipping a glass of something special. This version is a remake of the original 80s series with fresh actors performing most of the same monologues. It’s giving DRAMA. The Jodie Comer episode is my favourite. (I’m in love with her). |

My next recommendation is Bluey. I know the parents reading this will be so across Bluey — this suggestion is more for the child-less. Because, this just in: Bluey’s actually entertaining and perfect for having on your big screen when what you really want to do is scroll mindlessly through the apps on your small screen. And once you’re done pondering the ways in which you are an internet narcissist like me, Step Into Paradise is a great cleanse-watch. It tells the story of the iconic Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson’s 50 years in fashion. The story behind Diana’s unforgettable koala jumper! Juicy gossip in the form of Kee’s claim she had a one-night stand with John Lennon! I will say no more. |

Then there’s Strictly Ballroom. I first saw this film with my favourite Aunt on a VHS in her bungalow when I was about 8. Rewatching it quickly became a ritual that belonged to only us. |

I haven’t been able to see my Aunt in a while (COVID, borders, etc.), so we haven’t done this in ages. When it caught my eye on ABC iview a few weeks back, I impulsively hit play and watched it alone for the first time, because I don’t know when I’ll get to see her again and I wanted to remember that part of us. Misty-eyed stuff, I know.
While me and my Aunt can’t watch this timeless classic together, I do quite like the idea of other young people watching it with the important adults in their lives. If you decide to, I’d love to hear about it: [email protected]
