IS YOUR HOME READY FOR THE FIRST DEEP FREEZE?

As the chill of winter sets in, summer seems like a distant memory. Blankets are added to our beds, and the heat is turned on to warm our homes. Battling the harsh temperatures of winter can be challenging, but if you take steps to properly winterize your home now, you can save yourself from shivering too much over the next few months.

A large part of the winterizing process involves insulating your home against the cold. By simply sealing your home properly and protecting it from air leaks, you will use less energy to heat your home, which equals savings on utility bills.

This recent article from the New York Times shares a story of a homeowner in southern New Jersey and the steps she took to get a home inspection. Homeowners are informed that there is no obligation to make any of the changes recommended in an audit, but those who get work done can qualify for low- or no-cost loans, and for state rebates based on how much energy they will save by making the recommended changes. THE BEST GIFTS DO GREAT THINGS

Tis the season for plates piled high with food, tinsel by the truckload and spending quality time with those you love most. Whether you are spinning the dreidel or topping the tree, this time of year is also the biggest shopping season of the year, and that means many of us are making a list and checking it more than once.

Before you head to the mall, make sure that you are choosing gifts that will do great things this holiday season. ENERGY STAR certified home electronics have all of the latest features and functions, with the added bonus that they save energy and help protect the climate. If you are purchasing laundry or kitchen appliances, the ENERGY STAR can earn you rebates as well!

If you need new lights for the tree this year, consider LED! A decorative light string that has earned the ENERGY STAR uses 65% less energy than an incandescent light string. Here are a few reasons to get excited about LED lights:
  • More Energy Efficient
  • Durable (they can withstand much more punishment than incandescent)
  • Heat - LED lights don't produce the heat that incandescent lights produce. Plus, LED lights remain cool to the touch
  • Better for the Environment

About New Jersey's Clean Energy Program (NJCEP):

NJCEP provides financial and other incentives to encourage customers of the State's electric and natural gas utilities to install energy efficiency (EE) or renewable energy (RE) technologies. Installation of EE and RE measures helps residential customers as well as businesses, local governments and schools reduce their electric and natural gas usage resulting in lower energy costs and reduced environmental impacts. Since 2001, New Jersey has invested more than $3.6 billion in incentives provided to over 1.7 million customers that installed energy efficiency measures and over 100,000 customers that installed solar systems. Measures installed in the last year will save about 261,000 MWh per year reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 807,000 metric tons a year. The program is authorized and overseen by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.
