| | | | | Dear Haaretz Opinion Readers, This week marks my fourth as opinion editor at Haaretz. I thought it time to introduce myself, and reintroduce this weekly newsletter featuring (what I think are) our most important pieces. This week's decision by Israel to halt all aid to Gaza is horrendous. The issue is close to my heart – I spent much of the last decade as an aid worker in and out of refugee camps around the world. I'm horrified, once again, by the violations of the basic rights of civilians, who, regardless of who they are, deserve access to water, food, medicine, and shelter. I was also saddened this week by how difficult it was to find experts to write about this development. NGOs and UN agencies working on the issue fear having their visas and permits revoked; policy analysts and independent journalists are concerned they'll lose access to the IDF, and with it their capacity to influence decision makers. So, a special thank you to the two writers willing to stick out their necks on this critical and heartbreaking subject. Wishing to all who celebrate a Ramadan Kareem, Molly | |
