Starting Tomatoes in Coffee Cans

By Nicole B.

Starting Tomatoes in Coffee CansWhen starting tomato plants, I cut the bottom off of an empty Folger's coffee can. Then I poke some drain holes in the lid, put the lid on, and turn the can upside down. I fill the new pot with soil and plant my tomatoes. When they are ready to go into the garden I just take the lid off the bottom and the plant slides right out.

Up-cycled Seedling Pots

By Holly

Up-cycled Seedling Pots - planted yogurt cupsI had so much fun with this one rainy day late in March! I found that the plastic helps retain moisture better than my plantable pots. You can use this project to help kids learn about the value of recycling and creating something from nothing.

By Ana

Terra Cotta Turtle Planter - planter sitting on a deckThis is my take on an indoor/outdoor friendly planter. I wanted something fun looking to display on my porch during the warm months and as a decorative piece too for indoors during those cooler days. Meet Todd the turtle.

Bucket Garden Storage

By Ana

Bucket Garden Storage - newly painted pail on side of garden shed with seed packet and garden gloves insideI found these very unique buckets/pails. They are flat on one side and would work very well against a flat surface. Because I spend a lot of time outdoors in the garden, storage for small items can come in handy. I didn't really care for the colors, so I freshened them up with spray paint.

Give Hosta Its Own Niche - green and white hosta growing next to tree trunkHosta is said to be a shade loving plant. However, it will grow in full sun, sometimes producing large plants. I've seen long rows of huge plants placed where they get full sun all day.

Toilet Paper Tubes for Seedlings

By ShirleyE

Toilet Paper Tubes for Seedlings - small plant in TP tube pot Toilet paper tubes make excellent biodegradable plant pots for seedlings. All you need are the tubes and a pair of scissors. Make four cuts about an inch long at one end and fold them in. There should be a small hole for drainage. Fill with compost and sow seeds or plant a seedling.

Avoiding Messy Plant Clean-up

By Joanne B.

Umbrella open upside down under houseplants.Caring for your treasured plants can be a messy job with the water spillage, and the pruning, and all the dead leaves. I avoid this mess by inverting an umbrella under the plants I am working on to keep all the plant cuttings/dried up leaves off the floor and furniture.

Slowing Down Morning Glory Infestation
This is for morning glory (MG) vines that you can actually tell where they are coming from (ours come up from where the soil meets the foundation). I read about using white vinegar/Dawn dishwashing detergent to kill weeds, and decided to give it a try with this year's scourge of MG.

This Week's Questions
Dandelions Taking Over Flower Bed
How do I get rid of dandelions in my flower bed? I have been cutting them to the ground, but many have roots that are way too deep for me to pull or dig. I've sprayed with vinegar and they turn a little brown and bounce right back.

Sun Star Plant Not Blooming
My potted sun star plant began growing leaves about 2 months ago but there is still no sign of a flower stalk. (I was given this plant last Mother's Day while it was in bloom.) How long does it normally take to bloom? The leaves are healthy, but I wonder if I should have separated the bulbs and repotted since the leaf clusters are thick and close together.

I would like to transition a small houseplant to grow in water soluble water beads. It is now in potting soil. Is there a gentle way to transition the plant out of the potting soil without too much trauma?
