Speaking of Trump (and fiery things), the US president warned in a social media post that Vladimir Putin is “playing with fire.” Russia has in recent days escalated its aerial attacks against Ukraine, and Trump is considering new sanctions on Moscow, which CNN reported may come soon. Also under scrutiny: Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered US embassies worldwide to stop scheduling interviews for student visas as the Trump administration weighs stricter vetting of applicants’ social-media profiles. The move raises the stakes in an ongoing battle between the White House and universities . Deep Dive: AI Forecasting |

A meteorologist launches a weather balloon in Switzerland. Photographer: Fabrice Coffrini/AFP Weather forecasting has made tremendous progress in recent decades. Artificial intelligence may help even more. To forecast the weather hours or days from now, meteorologists rely on tens of millions of measurements from a wide range of instruments, including weather balloons, instruments on merchant ships and satellites in space. Since 2022, there’s been a proliferation of AI-driven models, which are trained on historical data that reconstruct past weather. Based on this, they then spot patterns and make predictions using far less computational power. |
