Spotlight: Ann Coulter May Surprise You

Coulter, now 60, was never any stranger to argument. The youngest of three children, she soon displayed an innate biting wit that would make her notorious later in life. More than two decades after her rise to fame, she still has an answer for everything.

After graduating from Cornell University cum laude in 1984, Coulter went on to receive her law degree in 1988 from the University of Michigan Law School. It was a promising career track but not quite aligned with her true calling as a media provocateur.

Coulter made headlines back in the late-1990s with her New York Times bestselling book, “High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton.” She has remained uncompromising in her belief that Clinton deserved impeachment. In fact, she even calls herself the “only true feminist” for defending Paula Jones publicly against Clinton.

Coulter commands attention with her strong, resolute voice and relentless confidence. Her audacious and lucrative career, however, has not led her to whizzing around on a private jet or booking penthouse suites at the Four Seasons. And she believes that powerful hedge fund corporations do not deserve a tax break.

Always ready for forthright banter, Coulter seems to delight in controversy. In 2019, she sought to taunt Democrats by insisting that she give the State of the Union address during a government shutdown.

For all her scornful remarks, Coulter can be surprisingly down-to-earth and believes the ultra-wealthy are harmful to society. She also contends there is rampant corruption among powerful American companies. She still believes firmly in the campaign issues that brought Donald Trump to the presidency, but she feels he let down his country by not fulfilling his campaign promises.

Coulter isn’t afraid of labels or of being unlikeable. She once famously announced that the 19th Amendment should be revoked because women who vote do so only with their husband’s political choices in mind. She has continued to court outrage from feminists and liberals.

Coulter has authored twelve books that tend to feature antagonistic titles, such as “Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism,” “If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans” and “Resistance Is Futile! How the Trump-Hating Left Lost Its Collective Mind.”

Coulter seemingly can't avoid stirring the pot. Her beefs with everyone from Hillary Clinton to John Edwards have kept her name in the headlines for two decades and counting. She has even ventured to say that a prominent group of 9/11 widows were “reveling in their status as celebrities.” And somehow this opponent of same-sex marriage has become the unofficial darling of the gay conservative community.

Don’t assume you can guess where Coulter stands on hot topics. She is surprising as much as she is contentious. In theory, she should be pro-troops on the ground in Afghanistan. In reality, though, she has contended from the start that the U.S. military should pull out of Afghanistan. Despite her avid support of Donald Trump in the past, she now firmly believes he blundered his way through the end of his presidency, leaving it impossible for him to succeed in 2024. We shall see…

Aside from vitriol and controversy, Coulter enjoys a good laugh and will poke fun at herself. Once asked if she'd consider running for president, she chuckled and said she couldn't do it because she isn't a morning person. For all her spiteful comments, she can be self-deprecating, friendly and even likable in some interviews.
