Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Steve Kornacki

Suffering from election night withdrawal? NBC’s got you covered — if you’re a football fan, at least.

Steve Kornacki, unquestionably one of the breakout stars of the 2020 election, stepped away from politics and made his debut on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. As you might expect, he brought the big board with him.

Dressed in his signature khakis, the MSNBC numbers guru broke down the NFL playoff probabilities with the final four weeks of the season approaching. During multiple segments in the pregame show, and then again at halftime of the Sunday night tilt between the Chiefs and the Broncos, Kornacki ran through a dizzying array of scenarios that instantly evoked memories of November 3 ... but not in a stressful way.

Kornacki came bearing good news for fans of several teams — including that the Cleveland Browns, at 9-3, are almost a lock to make the postseason for the first time since 2002.

“It’s not quite 100 percent,” Kornacki said. “But they are 97 percent away from the first [playoff berth] in 18 years.”

The remark drew laughs from NBC’s football analysts.

NFL fans, NBC colleagues, and others were all but unanimous in their opinion that Kornacki scored a touchdown on his football cameo. And they spread the cheering online.

MEDIA LOSER:
Pornhub

Visa and Mastercard are investigating their business relationships with the website Pornhub, after New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof exposed the pornographic site for carrying rape scenes and other horrific and non-consensual acts.

"It monetizes child rapes, revenge pornography, spycam videos of women showering, racist and misogynist content, and footage of women being asphyxiated in plastic bags," wrote Kristof. "A search for ‘girls under18′ (no space) or ’14yo’ leads in each case to more than 100,000 videos."

Kristof also detailed several descriptions and examples of sexual assault found on Pornhub, many including underaged girls and many posted onto the website without consent.

The article called out card issuers for working with the site, prompting Visa and Mastercard to investigate the matter, despite Pornhub's claim that the allegations are "irresponsible and flagrantly untrue."

The site has previously come under fire for "revenge" porn. Paypal stopped doing business with the site last year, and American Express does not allow their cards to be used at any “digital adult content websites.”

Turns out monetizing barely scrutinized, uploaded pornographic content isn't a super on the up-and-up proposition. Who knew?

"The Results Remain Unchanged"

Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, announced the state had completed its review of the 2020 election, and that it reaffirmed President-Elect Joe Biden’s victory.

In a Monday press conference, Raffensperger said the state will re-certify the results after three counts of the ballots.

"This Isn’t a Third World Country"

Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan defended the integrity of his state’s election on CNN this morning by saying “it wasn’t hard” to determine that it was a “fair and legal” contest.

"Scared."

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle admitted Monday that she and her family had contracted Covid-19.

“After testing positive for Covid-19, I have spent the better part of the last two weeks in bed isolating and taking all the precautions needed to protect myself, my family, and my community,” Ruhle told viewers of her Monday program.

"As a person who is sick and scared, I am begging you, please take this seriously. It is not over," she said in her plea for good judgment and caution.

A Recipe For Seduction

Okay, look. 2020 has been very strange for…a lot of reasons. But even as the year is weeks away from ending, Lifetime and KFC decided to seriously up the weirdness ante and give the world something that’s making the Twitterverse do a collective spit-take.

Barr Done

United States Attorney General William Barr, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, is weighing the decision of stepping down ahead of the end of Trump’s term.

"Poisonous."

Pro-Trump attorney Lin Wood floated a deranged conspiracy on Monday, suggesting that the death of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s daughter’s boyfriend was “planned” — and daring his followers to “search for the truth.”

The condemnation was nearly universal.

The End of the 'Swedish Model' of Pandemic Response

The controversial Swedish model for dealing with Covid-19, which relied on voluntary measures instead of mandatory restrictions to fight the pandemic, has been abandoned, it seems.

The change in strategy comes as Sweden’s death toll surpassed 7,000 last week, a steep number compared to its Nordic neighbors (Denmark, Finland and Norway have recorded 878, 415 and 354 deaths respectively). The current infection rate in Sweden (346 per 100,000) is more than double that of Germany, Britain and Spain.

“Authorities chose a strategy totally different to the rest of Europe, and because of it the country has suffered a lot in the first wave,” Stockholm physician Piotr Nowak told the Wall Street Journal. “We have no idea how they failed to predict the second wave.”

Must See Clip

"We cannot survive, my staff cannot survive"

A bar and restaurant owner in Los Angeles has gone viral in a video posted to social media that shows a movie studio was allowed to set up an outdoor dining area just yards from her now shut down business, which she calls a slap in her face by Mayor Eric Garcetti and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

“I’m losing everything. Everything I own is being taken away from me, and they set up a movie company right next to my outdoor patio,” says Angela Marsden, owner of the Pineapple Hill Grill & Saloon in the video, as she points out the difference between her outdoor dining area and that of the studio..

Gut-wrenching.
