On this day in 1960 The Canberra Times was reporting on the Christmas rush and chaos of last minute shopping and travel. There were record shoppers on the Friday night before Christmas with stores taking 20-25 per cent higher than their average sales in the previous year. Out of the stores, the busyness had spread to transport services. An interstate bus service was fully booked until after New Years day despite having doubled its services for the period. Three extra carriages had been added to the train heading from Canberra to Sydney to meet increased bookings and one airline reported that 10 per cent more freight had been handled than at the same time last year.
