René Lalique, Wingen-sur-Moder, 'Archers' vase, 1921 | "The cult of the body and worship of Antiquity were the main subjects of the art of the 1920s and 1930s. Lalique's 'Archers' vase captures the motif of the archaic, nude archer, battling with enormous birds of prey – to great effect! In his typical manner, Lalique's depiction mixes naturalistic and frieze-like components. Thus, the upright figurines seem to be vivid and at the same time sublime. The auburn 'Archers' model is very rare, its surface nuanced, matte and polished parts underline the exclusive aura of what had been a luxury piece even back then. Lalique made this vanguard and stylish model very early, in 1921, four years before Art Deco even received its name at the 'Exposition Internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels' in Paris." |
