Auditor's findings: The state’s pension system for public-school teachers is well managed but could be more rigorous and transparent when it comes to how it makes its investments and how it awards staff bonuses, according to Ohio Auditor Keith Faber. Andrew Tobias reports that Faber released findings from a special audit on Thursday, which he ordered in response to a critical report from a consultant working for the retirees in June 2021. 

 

Synenberg stays: Longtime Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Joan Synenberg will remain on the bench for at least another two years after Gov. Mike DeWine appointed her on Thursday to fill another vacant seat with the same court, reports Andrew Tobias. Synenberg was due to leave the bench at the end of the year after she narrowly lost the November election to Democratic Cleveland City Councilman Brian Mooney.

 

 

 

 

Statehouse and Politics

Expungement:  Legislation awaiting the governor’s signature could open the door for cities to execute mass expungements of drug possession offenses from their citizens’ records, reports Jake Zuckerman. Under the bill passed in the Ohio legislature’s lame duck session this month, a county prosecutor or city law director can apply to expunge fourth-degree or minor misdemeanor drug offenses in the court that sentenced a suspect. 

 

Bridge funding: The state will receive about $1.6 billion in federal funds to pay for a long-coveted expansion of the Brent Spence Bridge in Cincinnati, officials announced Thursday. Jack Zuckerman reports the work is scheduled to begin in 2023 and the total project will cost $3.6 billion, to be split among Ohio, Kentucky and the federal government.

Stimulus watch: What are the weirdest, wackiest or just plain worst ideas for spending pandemic-relief money? Stimulus Watch reporter Lucas Daprile is highlighting those decisions, which include everything from a dog park to a golf course clubhouse. 

 

Ranking cities: In 30 cities, rentals make up more than 50% of the occupied housing units, including 11 in Greater Cleveland, according to new estimates released from the Census Bureau. Zachary Smith reports that East Cleveland tops the list for the highest percent of rentals at 68.1%, and ranks cities by their share of renters vs. homeowners. 

 

Barberton Herald: The Barberton Herald published its last newspaper on Thursday. Megan Becka reports that after serving the Barberton and Norton communities for a century, the publication announced that it would cease publication. 

 

Business and Healthcare

Saving You Money: Many gyms and fitness centers are offering discounts this time of year. Before you sign up, reporter Sean McDonnell has some tips that could help you cut costs on your 2023 fitness goals.

 

COVID-19 update: The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio fell sharply from 17,891 last week to 13,047 this week, reports Julie Washington. Ohio has been over 10,000 cases per week every week, except for brief dips, since the beginning of May.

 

Sports betting: You can place legal sports bets on them in Ohio starting Jan. 1 on anything from chess to yacht races. Reporter Sean McDonnell explains what’s going on behind the scenes when they set the odds for all these bets. 

 

 

Crime and Courts

No refunds: The city of Cleveland does not have to refund $4.1 million to drivers who improperly paid traffic-camera tickets between 2005 and 2009 because the motorists paid the fines without disputing them, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled Thursday. Jeremy Pelzer reports that a the 4-3 ruling likely brings an end to a case filed more than 13 years ago, before Cleveland residents voted in 2014 to shut down the city’s traffic-camera program altogether.

Ending 2022 with music: There are many ways to celebrate the arrival of the new year. One way is live music. So, reporter Malcolm Abram is offering up a few off-the-beaten-path concerts and events for you to consider.

 

Unrefined: Riley Tatonetti, a personal trainer from Cleveland, has introduced Unrefined, a new meal delivery service, reports Paris Wolfe. From sauces to protein choices, Unrefined prepares meals from scratch and delivers them within a 35-mile radius of Cleveland.
