100 years ago today, Tennessee decided the fate of the 19th Amendment.

What makes this anniversary so important? In a year that's been characterized by a remarkable wave of protest, and in the lead-up to an already-contested election, the hard, flawed fight to win the vote for women is a reminder both of how far the country has come since its founding, and how far it still has to go. It's a reminder that progress is a balance between choosing when to put faith in established systems, and when to fight them. In her essay, Letty Pogrebin quotes a poem by the early 20th-century feminist Rose Pastor Stokes: "We trust that they may take us in," Stokes wrote. "Else must we batter down the walls,/ And force the doors,/ And enter in!"
