Human Rights Day: What is there to Celebrate?

As I ponder on the ineffectiveness, even failure, of National Shut Down Day, especially if it was designed to test our appetite for an Arab Spring or a repeat of the July riots, and I witness the cautionary tactics of the authorities as I see the EFF marching in all of our major CBD’s I begin to wonder if to-morrow, Human Rights Day, there is anything to feel good about? I find myself thinking ’We’ve had 30 years of this now, 30 years of proclaiming that our constitution is one of the best in the world, 30 years of our leadership urging us to protect our hard-won freedoms in our Bill of Rights (https://presidency). But also, 30 years of witnessing our decline into an anarchic failing state.

So, no surprises, I’m uncharacteristically, a tad gloomy?’

Mrs South Africa finalist aligns herself with two NPO foundations

Terisa Hsu-Lee, a Kyalami resident, mother, and business owner, has been chosen as a semi-finalist for Mrs South Africa 2023. Her resume includes being a Fourways passion-preneur and the owner of Ever Beauty SA Emporium located in the Pineslopes shopping center.

Hsu-Lee was informed of her selection last month following the National Casting event at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.

Running 160km, Nontuthuko hopes to provide 500 Pairs of Shoes to Rural children who walk to school

Nontuthuko Mgabhi (36), a dedicated ultra-runner from Richards Bay, is set to take on a new challenge: the Ultra ASIA, 160km Race in Vietnam from 6-9 March 2023.

But it’s not about personal achievement or conquering the ultra-running world for Mgabhi. Her mission is much closer to home and about bettering the lives of rural schoolchildren in South Africa.

Business speaking up

There has been strong opinion on the ‘unwillingness’ of prominent business leaders to publicly ‘speak up’ and take our government to task regarding our current loadshedding, corruption, cadre deployment, crime, service delivery, unemployment, potholes etc. malaise. Comments abound, like “So many spineless CEO’s out there. Way too comfortable with their inflated packages, share incentives and bonus structures. Quite a pathetic bunch really. Nothing but self-serving individuals who cannot care less about what is happening around them. Life is too good on top.”

Ignite Fitness Celebrates Human Rights Day with open week.

With eleven gyms in South Africa, Ignite Fitness will be hosting a FREE open week from 17 – 21 March in aid of Human Rights Day. “We want to encourage our members, and their guests, to bring along non-perishable food to gain access to our gyms during this open week. As a community based location, we want to be the hub where members can do more than just work on themselves. Estimated Tax Freedom Day (TFD) – the day after the country has earned enough money to pay for government – will be on May 14 this year. That is 2 days later than last year’s prediction.
The prediction is based on the intended level of tax collection for central government mentioned in the Budget Speech. Typically, the actual figure – which is the general government revenue as a percentage of GDP from the Reserve Bank Quarterly - turns out to be 30% more than the intended figure for central government.
