...[read more] By Dorria Watt Septuagenarian Phil Wade (75) has decided to compete in the Cape2Rio yacht race – which starts this Saturday, January 11, 2020 – to raise funds for a bursary that will enable a deserving young lady from Cato Manor Township near Durban – whom Captain Wade has never met – enroll in a maritime education programme that will change her life and help her fulfill her dreams of one day working at sea. Captain Wade is the oldest competitor in this year’s race and will be the only South African onboard the yacht, Saravah, the Brazilian entry.
He has competed in the Cape2Rio once before, in 1973 (aged 29) and finished in third place.

Not by a long way. That honour belongs to a Wits-educated former senior partner at Werksmans, a 70 year old you’ve probably never heard of called Rodney Sacks. The youngest person to ever make partner, after almost two decades with the law firm Sacks relocated to California in 1989. A year later he teamed up with another Witsie, Hilton Schlosberg, to lead a consortium which paid $12.5m for a company called Hansen Natural. That business is now known as Monster Beverage Corp, owner of the world famous energy drink.
...[read more] By Steuart Pennington Cape Talk on Friday 10 Jan reports Prof Jonathan Jansen maintains that the matric pass rate is not a good indicator of the health of the education system. He says South Africa’s “real” matric pass rate is 39%. Known as the cohort pass rate, it’s the percentage of learners who started grade 10 two years ago and passed their matric exams in 2019. On Wednesday, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced that the matric class of 2019 has achieved a pass rate of 81.3%, up from 78.2% in 2018. We have a “system on the rise” she claimed.
