Tori Amos' musical heroes, the story of Custard and TISM on Rage!
I'm not a movie guy. I like film. I even studied film for a bit. But I got lazy, I got distracted by music and I kinda just… stopped watching movies. I'm not proud of it. So, take this with a grain of salt: I reckon Mike LaFontaine – manager of The New Main Street Singers in Christopher Guest's 2003 film A Mighty Wind – is the best movie character of all time. In his first two minutes on screen, improvisational comedy actor Fred Willard, who plays the part, completely steals the show. His bad jokes, bad hair, bad shirts, and stories about the good old days are all uncomfortably familiar – we've all met a version of this man in our lives and wondered whether he's for real. It's the best part of a film that has so many great parts. Its portrayal of aging folk musicians who were once big in the genre's heyday is packed with incredible characters and hilarious jokes. Willard, who was also in Spinal Tap, died over the weekend at 86. It wouldn't be right to not pay tribute. If you have a spare 90 minutes this weekend (you do), I recommend watching A Mighty Wind and relishing in one of the great comedic performances of the modern day. |
