What we're reading — Sen. Susan Collins became the first Republican to back Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Joe Biden's nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court. She broke the news to The New York Times after a second meeting with Jackson on Tuesday in which Collins said the nominee allayed concerns raised by Republicans during her confirmation hearing last week. — Maine lawmakers are poised to double vehicle inspection fees after a bill to do so cleared the House in a bipartisan Tuesday vote. The proposed increase came out of a study that called for an electronic inspection program that would make it easier for garages to log information. It would pay for the costs of going to that method if the Maine State Police need to contract services out. — The founder of the Wreaths Across America nonprofit announced plans on Tuesday to build a $1 billion veterans historical park with the world's biggest flagpole. It would include nine miles of remembrance walls, museums, a hotel, restaurants, shops and an event venue. (“I think the popularity of this is going to be contagious, just like the COVID virus but better,” Morrill Worcester said at a news conference.) |
