Where to watch the eclipse in Northeast Ohio: Your guide to dozens of out-of-this-world events in Cleveland, nearby communities It’s been more than 200 years since the last total solar eclipse passed through northern Ohio. And it’ll be another 75 years before it happens again. So we better make the most of it. But how? There are numerous ways to experience an eclipse – with a crowd or in solitude, in the city, in the country or in your backyard. Numerous local communities, businesses and attractions have put together eclipse-watch parties and group gatherings to help people experience the eclipse in a variety of unique and interesting ways. Some feature NASA scientists, others musical performances and some fireworks. We’ve compiled a list of some of the biggest and most interesting events taking place on April 8, as well as the days leading up to it. READ MORE Cleveland International Film Festival The 48th Cleveland International Film Festival will present 140 feature-length films, including “Thelma,” “The Idea of You,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “Devo” as well as 225 short (under 40 minutes) films, during its 11-day in-person festival, April 3-13, at Playhouse Square. If will be followed by CIFF48 Streams, an online version of the festival April 14-21. Tickets for in-person screenings are $16 for CIFF members and $18 for non-members. It will have its local premiere at 7:35 p.m., Friday, April 5, at the State Theatre. The documentary, which follows Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney from their early days in Akron to their present status as certified rock stars, had its world premiere at South By Southwest in March. DETAILS ‘City Noir’ by The Cleveland Orchestra The concert begins with Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” which conjures a mythological forest on a sunlit afternoon. That contrasts with composer-conductor John Adams “City Noir,” a wild symphonic thrill ride inspired by 1940s and ’50s film noir. A third piece, Gabriella Smith’s ode to the forests of her native Northern California, completes the package while showing off Severance’s newly restored Norton Memorial Organ and organ virtuoso James McVinnie. Dixie Longate, a fast-talking, ginger-haired Alabama gal brings grandma’s Tupperware party into the 21st century at Akron Civic Theater. She offers alternative uses for the plastic kitchen staple. DETAILS CMA MIX: Stargazer The Cleveland Museum of Art launches eclipse weekend with MIX: Stargazer. DJ Dubaku will spin an open-format dance set using popular songs that mention the sun, moon, and stars. From Lagos, Dubaku is known for blending Afro-House with multiple genres of music. The first 500 guests receive a glow straw. Those who arrive later receive a glow bracelet. And everyone is welcome to accessorize with their own glow sticks. Cleveland Guardians home opener The home opener is practically a holiday in Cleveland. It’s even bigger this year as it falls on the same day as the total solar eclipse. With that in mind, officials pushed the game against the Chicago White Sox to a 5:10 p.m. start time. 5:10 p.m., April 8. TV & MOVIES ‘Loot’ "Ted Lasso" may be dunzo (although it's good to have a dream) but there are still a number of feel-good shows on Apple TV+ worth checking out. "Loot," starring Maya Rudolph, falls under that category. Debuting its second season Wednesday, Rudolph plays Molly, the ex-wife of a billionaire (Adam Scott) who decides to donate a majority of her money to good causes. The show also stars Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Joel Kim Booster, Ron Funches and Nat Faxon. DETAILS ‘Lopez vs. Lopez’ "Lopez vs. Lopez," a comedy starring George Lopez and his daughter Mayan Lopez, returns for season two this week on NBC. The show is based on the ups-and-downs in George and Mayan's real-life relationship. Guest stars include Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias and Jaime Camil. Episodes also stream on Peacock. DETAILS 'Monkey Man' Dev Patel’s got something to say, but he's going to let his fists do the talking. With his directorial debut, the wild action revenge flick “Monkey Man,” the Oscar-nominated actor makes a bold statement with this one-two punch of a film that asserts himself as both an action star and promising genre director. “Monkey Man” is a love letter to East Asian martial arts movies, and to Indian folklore and culture. The monkey in question is both Hanuman, the Hindu god of wisdom, strength, courage, devotion and self-discipline, and it is also the face of the dingy rubber mask that the Kid (Patel) dons for his underground boxing matches, which are announced by a delightfully slimy Sharlto Copley. This is a revenge picture, and so the Kid, who sometimes goes by the alias “Bobby,” must get revenge, driven by his fiery blood-soaked memories, and the sound of his mother whispering Hanuman’s legend in his ear. REVIEW ‘Walker’ As the CW looks to establish a new identity as a major network, one of the four originals renewed for this TV season premieres the first week of April. Jared Padalecki's "Walker," debuts season four this week. "Walker" streams on Max. DETAILS ‘Sherlock ‘ We've seen him as a so-called hot priest, but if you watched Andrew Scott as Moriarty on "Sherlock," you know he's also great at playing bad. This time, Scott steps into the role of Tim Ripley, the fraudster-turned-killer created by author Patricia Highsmith, for a limited-series. "Ripley" premieres Thursday on Netflix. DETAILS ‘Sugar ‘ Colin Farrell plays a private investigator in the new series "Sugar" for Apple TV+, where the central mystery is to locate the missing granddaughter of a big time Hollywood producer. Reviews are already screaming about a plot twist so proceed with caution online if you don't want spoilers. "Sugar" debuts Friday, April 5. DETAILS ‘Wish’ Disney Animation's "Wish" lands on Disney+ on Wednesday. Released last fall in theaters, "Wish" — an origin story for the wishing star, stuffed with nods to past Disney classics — seemed like quintessential Mouse House magic but fizzled with critics and audiences. In her review, AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr called it "more concept than story, a strained and forgettable attempt to pay homage to the studio's 100 years." The voice cast includes Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine. DETAILS ‘The Zone of Interest’ Jonathan Glazer's best-picture nominee "The Zone of Interest" arrives on Max on Friday, April 5. The film, haunting and formalist, depicts the daily life of Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), and his wife, Hedwig ( Sandra Hüller ) while living in their home next door to Auschwitz. Since its premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival, "The Zone of Interest" has been hailed as harrowing drama about human capacity for compartmentalizing atrocity. In her review, AP's Jocelyn Noveck wrote that "the horror assaults our senses in other, deeper ways." At the Oscars, where "The Zone of Interest" won best international film, Glazer spoke out against Israel's war in Gaza, sparking a backlash from some in Hollywood. DETAILS ‘Girls State’ A nonfiction highlight of the year, Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine's "Girls State" premieres Friday, April 5, on Apple TV+. The film is a companion piece to their prize-winning 2020 documentary "Boys State." Like that film, "Girls State" follows a handful of teenagers over a week in a mock-government program. That this time it's high-school girls changes not only the tenor of discourse around political issues like abortion but finds added tension in the inequities between the girls and boys. DETAILS |

Sheila E. Sheila E., the Prince-mentored Queen of Percussion, will release her first-ever salsa album, titled "Bailar," on Friday, April 5. "Bailar" is a celebration of the genre — and a new chapter in Sheila E.'s rich musical history, beginning with a reimagination of "Bemba Colorá," originally performed by Celia Cruz, now featuring Gloria Estefan and Mimy Succar and, of course, a drum solo. Ruben Blades, Gilberto Santa Rosa, and Luis Enrique are also featured on the album. DETAILS Tori Kelly A few days before Tori Kelly released her 2023 EP, "tori," the R&B-pop vocalist was rushed to the ICU at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after suffering a blood-clot related collapse. She's healed since — and just eight months later, will release her fifth studio album, "TORI." The period is appropriate — the album feels definitive; Tori Kelly stretching her familiar soulful tone in to classic-sounding songs about love ("cut") and loss ("high water"). DETAILS Conan Gray — He's a lonely dancer, so dance with him so he doesn't cry! Gen Z musician (and Olivia Rodrigo BFF) Conan Gray's third studio album, "Found Heaven," deepens his penchant for synth-pop. Max Martin is a producer (known for his work with Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, Robyn… the list goes on and on). And the lead single, the '80s revisionist "Lonely Dancers," is an earworm for the ages. "Your lover left, broke up tonight/My lover's busy, kissing other guys/We're both alone now, tears in our eyes," he sings. "We're lonely dancers, there's no need to hide/We're lonely dancers, baby/Dance with me so we don't cry." If it is ascendent depressive tunes with a musical theater sensibility you're after, well, you've found it! DETAILS Bryson Tiller The Grammy nominated R&B and hip-hop hitmaker Bryson Tiller's eponymous fourth studio album is a bit of a mystery. His last album, "Anniversary," was released four years ago, and little is known about his new era. A week before it drops, only one song has been released, "Whatever She Wants" — which Tiller has said doesn't sound like anything on the album — and the only confirmed feature is Grammy best new artist winner Victoria Monét. Both are reason enough to get excited. DETAILS The Motet One of the best “Cuisinart acts” going, these accomplished players formed in Denver in the late ‘90s and take a Frank Zappa-esque approach to afro-beat, jazz and funk.
