Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for July 7. Before we get started, I heard there was some big sports news in New Orleans yesterday. This may be a Saints newsletter, but when you're done here make sure you stop by our Pelicans page for a full breakdown of a big day. Ok, back to regularly scheduled newslettering. A few of us put on our thinkin' caps this week and tried to answer this question: Of the 53 players on the active roster, which are the five who might be most crucial to the team's overall success this season? Some of those names should not be a surprise. The NFL is a quarterback-driven league, and it can be said of any team that it needs its quarterback to perform at a high level for that team to reach its full potential. Jameis Winston, therefore, is on this list. In case you missed it, he's now doing stuff without his brace. But how about some others? A rookie left tackle? Check. A newcomer in the secondary? You bet. A receiver who hasn't been healthy since Week 1 of the 2020 season? Darn tootin'. Take a spin through the entire list here, which my colleague Patrick Magee and I assembled this week. If you think we missed somebody, feel free to email Patrick and only Patrick to tell him how wrong he and only he was at [email protected]. Fact o' the dayThe normally dead period of the NFL news cycle was jolted back to life like a weird football Frankenstein when the division rival Panthers traded for embattled former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Panthers are apparently intending to have Mayfield compete for the starting quarterback job, but you'll have to excuse me if I'm not buying that. Mayfield does bring some fun credentials to the NFC South ... but they're not exactly unique. He's now the third Heisman Trophy winning quarterback (Joining Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota) and the fourth top-three overall pick (joining Winston, Mariota, and his teammate/sparring partner Sam Darnold). The other guy in the NFC South is just some quadragenarian who managed neither to win a Heisman nor be selected in the top 198 picks of his draft class more than 20 years ago. Social post o' the dayOk, bear with me. I promise this tweet is timely. In 67 days the Saints will open their 2022 season against the Atlanta Falcons. Pierre Thomas wore the No. 23 uniform for the Saints. 67-23 = 44. As in Super Bowl 44. When Pierre Thomas did this. See? Timely. We could watch @Pierre_Thomas's touchdown to give the #Saints the lead in SB XLIV all day.📺 Saints @ Falcons · Sept. 11 · FOX · Noon CT pic.twitter.com/uXiVgOgG31 — New Orleans Saints (@Saints) July 6, 2022That's all we have for the day.
