Stay warm, Michiganders!❄️ |
Jack Frost is definitely making his presence known in Michigan as frigid temperatures and snow continues to grip the state. Most of Michigan experienced wind chill temperatures in the -10 to -25 degree range on Monday and Tuesday. In the western Upper Peninsula, a wind chill of 50 below zero was recorded. The ongoing winter weather is forcing some school districts around Michigan to close today. Here's a look at closures in Kalamazoo, Flint, Jackson, West Michigan, Washtenaw County, Bay and Saginaw Counties. If you plan on warming your home with the help of a space heater, be careful. This space heater model is being recalled for electric shock and fire hazards. |

Snow to intensify Wednesday, up to 6 inches for parts of West Michigan |
Be aware: Just as this bitterly cold airmass starts to move out of Michigan on Wednesday, snowfall is expected to re-intensify across part of the state. This could lead to as much as 6 inches of new snow across some areas that already have been hard-hit by lake-effect snow in the last couple of weeks, the National Weather Service said. Snowfall impacts from this northern-stream Clipper system are expected to last into Thursday. Winds could be in the 25 to 35 mph range, carrying the snow farther inland. Looking ahead: The long-range weather forecasters at NOAA paint a wild weather picture for Michigan in February. NOAA seems to indicate they think February’s temperatures will track to near normal. This does mean we could have a few days in the 40s during the month, but most afternoons would warm into the 30s. The long-range forecasts for next month also predict more precipitation than normal. On the water: The Canada-based weather research group, the International Centre For Waterspout Research, says the potential is very high for waterspouts and steam devils over four of our five Great Lakes right now. And it’s because the coldest airmass in the last six years is parked over the region, dropping our wind chills to the -25 to -45 range across the Lower and Upper peninsulas. |

Michigan joins legal fight to stop Trump’s birthright citizenship order |
An executive order signed by President Donald Trump on his first day in office is already entangled in legal battles. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel along with 17 other Democratic state attorneys general sued the Trump administration Tuesday, Jan. 21 over an order that aims to end the Constitutional right to birthright citizenship. Under the 14th Amendment, anyone born in the United States is guaranteed citizenship regardless of their parents’ immigration status. President Donald Trump pardoned nearly 1,500 supporters suspected of storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Among those who breached the Capitol and were federally charged include at least 26 suspects arrested in or from Michigan, of whom 20 received sentences ranging from home confinement to five years in prison, according to U.S. Attorney’s Office data and other media reports. Explanation: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has vetoed just over a dozen bills passed last year by the Democratic-controlled state Legislature. While the Democratic governor has and continues to sign into law a number of bills approved in the last legislative session, she rejected 13 of those bills on Friday, Jan. 17. Here’s a look at each of those bills and why Whitmer said she rejected them. |

Michigan makes it easier to access birth control |
Greater access: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a package of bills Tuesday, Jan. 21, that will allow pharmacists to prescribe and dispense birth control drugs, regardless of a person’s age or evidence of a prior contraceptive prescription. Michigan joins 30 states that have similar legislation. In healthcare: The United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine union ratified a three-year contract with University of Michigan Health, according to a Monday, Jan. 20 release from the health system. The union represents 380 physician assistants across Michigan Medicine and the university’s health system, officials said. Coming soon: A former Portage hotel will soon transform into an 80-unit homeless shelter to provide families in need with safety, stability and resources to rebuild their lives, according to county officials. The transitional family shelter is expected to open in mid-2025. |

Nearly extinct Michigan burger chain announces new restaurant locations |
Revitalized: A favorite burger brand from years ago — with only one known location still operating — is planning a comeback. Hot ‘n Now, the famed burger chain born in Kalamazoo in 1984 that expanded nationwide and then shrank back to a single Michigan location, will soon have more locations in Michigan, according to a developer. Cast your vote: After taking home first place the past two years, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is seeking to extend its win streak on a USA Today readers’ choice award for best sculpture park in the nation. The 158-acre garden and sculpture park was nominated for USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice award, and Meijer Gardens is asking residents to help it secure first place by voting online. Also in business: Michigan-based manufacturer Landscape Forms is about ready to start expanding its Comstock Township facility. The new, $70 million facility will add 300,000 square feet and 125 new jobs to its current 500-person workforce, per the release. |
