You Friday evening update from the Lancashire Post
View email online | | | | | Jan 14, 2022 | | | | | | Good evening, The number of Covid figures across the county - and indeed the country - is finally falling. However, the legacy of the last seven weeks since the Omicron variant took hold will be long lasting and affect around one in 10 people in a significant way. Latest figures reveal that around six million people are currently waiting for a hospital operation or procedure - and many of them have been delayed because of the pandemic. Hospital intensive care units are not as full as they were almost two years ago, mainly thanks to the vaccination programme. So why is it that operations are still being cancelled on a daily basis? It’s because most large hospitals have around 100 people taking up beds who no longer require hospital treatment...but there is no adequate care in place so that they can leave. Convalescent or ‘continuation’ hospitals were closed in the 80s and 90s as a cost-saving measure, while most local authority care homes have been closed for the same reason. What poor decisions those seem now. Until next time, take care, Gillian [email protected] | |
