There were 10.8 million job openings in January, down from 11.2 million the prior month but still high from a historical perspective, according to the Labor Department. Single women's pay gap with men is getting larger The pay gap between never married men and women has increased over the past decade, with single women's median weekly earnings 92.1% of what their male counterparts make, compared to 95.8% ten years ago, according to Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo economist Sarah House was surprised at the growing disparity but also notes that the wage gap is partly due to lower pay in industries dominated by women, such as teaching, compared with those dominated by men, such as construction. My friend Ryan found out yesterday that he was passed up for the job as head football coach at the high school where he teaches. I was shocked. He had been the interim head coach for the last two years and took the team to a championship. Everyone believed he was a shoo-in for the job. I was disappointed for Ryan, but I also wished he had applied for another coaching position that had been open at a nearby school. The program wasn’t nearly as attractive as the one he was leaving. It hadn’t had a winning season in several years and struggled to recruit players. “No one wants that job,” my cousin told me. I had called him to discuss the situation. He’s well connected in our local prep sports community. “They’re in the wrong conference and the administration doesn’t support the program. It’s a dead end.” I couldn’t get Ryan out of my head the rest of the day. My gut told me he could take the fledgling program and turn it into something of substance. He had been mentored by one of the best high school football coaches in the area. He knows how to win. Taking the job no one wants takes guts. It calls for risk, creativity, stamina and brains. You must endure enormous criticism and scrutiny. But these jobs also come with opportunity. They offer growth and the potential for advancement. Those who do it right become stars in their fields.
