Hello, Here’s something I deeply believe: We all have the power — and the responsibility — to shape the future of AI. That’s why I’m excited to be heading to the AI Action Summit in Paris next week.1 This gathering will bring together around 100 global leaders, including heads of state and tech CEOs, to discuss the future of AI. The decisions made here will shape how AI affects society — from global policies to groundbreaking products. Alongside Mozilla colleagues, I’ll be there to advocate for AI openness and governance, ensuring these critical conversations prioritize a future where AI works for the common good. Before the summit begins, there’s one crucial step we can take together: Strengthen the global call for trustworthy AI. Sign Mozilla’s petition and show global leaders at the AI Summit that the world demands AI that puts people first. Add your name → AI that benefits all of us needs: Openness: Transparency, open-source collaboration, and fair competition, with safeguards to prevent misuse. Fair Markets: Policies to prevent monopolies, and provide equitable access to AI resources. Accountability: Enforceable regulations prioritizing safety, privacy, fairness, and public interest, rejecting self-regulation. To be Public: AI as a public good, focused on societal challenges and accessible to all. |
In the spirit of openness, I wanted to share more details on what’s at stake and a behind-the-scenes look at Mozilla’s key priorities for the event. Think of this as your personal invitation to join me on this journey — because together, we can help shape a future where AI truly serves humanity. What is the AI Summit? Think of AI Action Summits as the AI equivalent of early climate talks (the UN’s COP conferences), but with a smaller, invite-only audience. Decision-makers from politics, economy, science and civil society discuss and shape how AI impacts society — especially generative AI models like ChatGPT, which are transforming how we live and work. The two-day events are structured into two parts: A “Business Forum”, which includes businesses and a smaller number of civil society organizations, and one day reserved for government leaders to make high-level AI policy decisions. Why is Mozilla attending? We are attending to ensure that the principles of openness, accountability, and fairness are at the heart of these high-level discussions. At the Summit, I’ll be joining Mitchell Baker, Executive Chair of Mozilla’s Board, who is a key member of the Summit’s steering committee, and Mark Surman, President of Mozilla, who will be playing an instrumental role in advancing open-source initiatives and championing fair competition in AI. The Mozilla Foundation will also play a key role at the summit: Common Voice, Mozilla’s free open source speech database, has been accepted as an official showcase project at the summit. Mozilla’s Responsible Computing Challenge team will lead the EQUAL Compute Network at the summit — an initiative ensuring fair access to AI computing power for researchers, nonprofits, and underrepresented groups. Maximilian Gahntz, Mozilla’s AI Policy Lead, will speak at the launch event for the AI Accountability Disclosures task force. I will bring together artists, innovators, and industry leaders for a special event aimed at building connections and shaping the future of AI. This is where you come in. By joining our call for trustworthy AI, you can help amplify our message to global leaders. At Mozilla, we’ve always believed in building in the open — and AI’s development and governance should be no different. Together, we can create a future where AI serves the common good: open, fair, and accountable to everyone. I’ll be in touch after the Summit to share my reflections on what we accomplished and what’s next. Thank you for being part of this movement. Always yours, Nabiha Syed Executive Director Mozilla More Information: 1. Read more on the official website of the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit (10 - 11 February 2025) |
