Observing the destruction of this lush botanical environment and thriving wildlife habitat, she set out to preserve its natural history with camera and pen. In 1991 local citizen Ken Brunswick established “Limberlost Swamp Remembered,” a group dedicated to restoring some of the wetlands. Approximately 1,500 acres have been purchased and restored with planting of native trees, bushes and flowers, bringing back numerous species of birds, animals and insects. HISTORY OF THE MUSICAL LIMBERLOST Helen first read ¨A Girl of the Limberlost" when she was twelve. Fifty years later, she was accepted into the BMI/Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop in NYC, as a lyricist studying under Maury Yeston. During her four years in the Workshop, she got the idea to adapt part of the novel as a musical. Eventually, after moving to Los Angeles, she found Dana Howell as composer-collaborator.
