| IMPORTANT | | | Show Trial #1 | Trump Endorsed Rioters’ Calls to ‘Hang Mike Pence’ Seated at an ornate desk beneath a massive TV, the seven Democrats and two Republicans of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack took prime-time viewers through a two-hour presentation on former President Donald Trump’s efforts to remain in power. Characterizing it as an “attempted coup,” they showed video after video of aides and officials — including Ivanka Trump and former Attorney General Bill Barr — testifying that the election hadn’t been stolen. Republican Rep. Liz Cheney revealed that Trump had endorsed calls to hang former Vice President Mike Pence. “Maybe our supporters have the right idea,” Trump said, adding that Pence “deserves it.” (Sources: NYT, BBC, The Hill) |

| | Show Trial #2 | Foreign Fighters Sentenced to Death by Russia-Backed Separatists A court in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic in eastern Ukraine found three foreign fighters — Britons Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner and Moroccan Brahim Saadoun — guilty of being “mercenaries” and sentenced them to death by firing squad. The British government said that Aslin and Pinner were long-serving members of the Ukrainian military and — under the terms of the Geneva Conventions — should be treated as prisoners of war. Robert Jenrick, the Aslin family’s representative in Parliament, said they’re being treated differently from Ukrainian POWs and “used as hostages to make a point.” The men will appeal their sentences. | | ‘Laboratory of Horrors’ | Kherson Offers Dystopian Vision of ‘Russified Ukraine’ As fighting continued to rage in Sievierodonetsk and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy admitted his armed forces are losing as many as 200 people every day, Michael Carpenter, the U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, described the Russian occupied region of Kherson as the “Kremlin’s laboratory of horrors.” Carpenter added that Russia’s carefully coordinated takeover of the region and installation of puppet leaders “lays bare the truth of its vision of a subjugated, Russified Ukraine.” Meanwhile, British officials warned that the southern port city of Mariupol is at risk of a catastrophic cholera outbreak. | | Hard or Soft Ball? | China and US Can’t See Eye to Eye on North KoreaWhen Russia and China vetoed U.N. Security Council sanctions on North Korea it marked the first time the council had publicly disagreed over how to deal with the pariah nation since 2006. The U.S. pushed for sanctions to prevent Pyongyang from conducting nuclear tests. Now, China’s U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun’s made clear that Beijing opposed sanctions for the same reason. Zhang insisted that “denuclearization is one of the key goals of China.” But he said: “Only with dialogue we see the improvement in the situation. With sanctions, we see the further deterioration.” Only time will tell who’s right. (Source: Reuters) |

| | Briefly | Here are some things you should know about today: Newsworthy? Fox News chose not to air the Jan. 6 hearings live, shunting them to lower-rated sister channel Fox Business so as not to rain on Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham’s parades. (Source: NYT) Baby, one more time? Britney Spears’ ex-husband Jason Alexander has been charged with four offenses after attempting to crash her wedding to Sam Asghari at her Los Angeles home yesterday. (Source: Sky News) Peter Putin? Russian President Vladimir Putin compared himself to Peter the Great, claiming that while many believe the 18th-century tsar “took something from Sweden” during the great northern war, he in fact “returned” what was Russia’s. | INTRIGUING | | | Extinct. Not Extinct. | Found Alive: ‘Fantastic’ Galápagos Tortoise Last Seen in 1906 She’s a hero in a half shell. Genomic sequencing has confirmed that Fernanda, a lone tortoise discovered on the island of Fernandina in 2019, belongs to the same species as the “fantastic giant tortoise” collected by explorer Rollo Beck 116 years ago. The match took researchers by surprise as Fernanda lacks the flared saddleback of Beck’s specimen. “Everything that we knew about this species said it was extinct,” said Princeton University’s Stephen Gaughran, a lead author of the study announcing the finding. “It’s a big deal.” Tortoise footprints spotted on Fernandina have experts hoping there may be more out there. | | Cake? Walk! | China’s ‘Lipstick King’ Canceled Over Tank Cake Turns out you can’t have your cake and eat it. Last Friday — on the eve of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre — social media sensation Austin Li Jiaqi’s livestream was cut short after a tank-shaped ice cream cake made a brief appearance. Apart from an apology issued later that day, Li hasn’t been seen since. The “fiasco occurred because his team weren’t even aware of the June 4 incident in 1989,” said Eric Liu, who tracks censorship in China. Many of Li’s generation know nothing about the massacre and — paradoxically — the cake incident has left them scrabbling for answers. (Sources: Vice, Insider) |

| | Rock On, Eric Adams | NYC’s First ‘Crystals Guy Mayor’ and the City’s ‘Special Energy’Adams, a former police officer who’s known for wearing “healing crystal” bracelets, recently claimed that New York City’s location atop a store of rare gems and stones gives it “a special energy.” Experts says he’s at least half right: Formed when two tectonic plates collided, the “Manhattan schist” is packed with a rare mix of minerals including quartz, kyanite and dumortierite. And as for the bracelets? Crystal expert Andrew Pacholyk says they contain minerals that would be helpful for any leader. Michael Brant Shermer of the Skeptics Society is less convinced: “If it’s for entertainment purposes only, it’s fine.” (Sources: NY Post, The Guardian) |

| | Lap of Luxury | Albany Woman Loses Dachshund, Finds It in Hilary Swank’s Lap Chelsea Blackwell launched a frantic search after her beloved sausage dog, Blue, went AWOL Monday. She soon came across a throng of squad cars outside the Greyhound bus station in Albany, New York, and thinking someone had gotten shot, rushed to investigate. Realizing she’d stumbled upon a movie set, Blackwell resumed her search, asking everyone whether they’d seen Blue. One man said he had — and that “a celebrity” had picked the dog up. A phone call and an hour later Blue arrived: borne by a gray car and sitting in two-time Oscar winner (and serial dog rescuer) Hilary Swank’s lap. (Source: AP) |

| | ‘Vindictive’ | PGA Tour Suspends LIV Golf Rebels as Series Kicks Off The PGA indefinitely suspended six-time major winner Phil Mickelson, former world No. 1 Dustin Johnson and 15 other players who’ve joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series. “These players have made their choice for their own financial-based reasons. But they can’t demand the same PGA Tour membership benefits, considerations, opportunities and platform as you,” Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a letter to members. Meanwhile, LIV Golf launched its inaugural 54-hole tournament outside London with a flyover of aging planes, a brass band masquerading as Grenadier Guards — and few fans. Greg Norman's breakaway league labeled the PGA’s decision “vindictive and troubling.” (Sources: Al Jazeera, AP, Daily Mail) |
