Office-to-residential conversions rise amid vacancies The U.S. office space industry continues to struggle with declining occupancy rates as remote work reshapes workplace culture, leading to record-high vacancies and mounting fears of mortgage defaults on underutilized properties, writes Pierre G. Banks making modifications to CRE loans Some U.S. banks are modifying commercial real estate loans as they navigate a decline in office property values. On average, banks with less than $100 billion of assets modified 0.32% of these loans during the first three quarters of 2024, according to a Moody's Ratings report. Meanwhile, the modification rate was 1.93% for medium-size banks and 0.79% for the largest banks.
