Thanks for starting your day with Morning Headlines. Here's are some of today's top stories. Gov. Jeff Landry is looking to overhaul the state's industrial tax exemption program to eliminate the requirement that manufacturers prove they will create or retain jobs. Landry spoke of the business-friendly adjustments to the controversial program at the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting. Blake Paterson has the details. Also on Tuesday, Landry confirmed that he sought the revisions made last year to a $3 billion foundation that will come out of the proposed sale of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, revisions that would bar research money from going to the state's colleges and universities. Landry said he thinks the money should go toward workforce development, and that giving it to institutions like LSU and Tulane University would be wasteful. Stephanie Riegel has the story. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says her office plans to prosecute criminal cases in New Orleans as part of a deal with Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams. Murrell says the initiative will target violent crimes such as murders, carjackings and armed robberies, but one aspect of it has raised questions from civil rights advocates and the city's police watchdog. Jillian Kramer has this report. Check out all the latest news, sports and entertainment coverage from The Times-Picayune. Chad |
