It was adoption day. The pet store was working with the Lexington Humane Society to find good homes for abandoned dogs and cats. After endless pleas from my sons, Mark (age seven) and Luke (age six), we decided to stop in. We had been talking about getting a dog for a while.

I didn't know it at the time but adopting a homeless dog would really make me feel better. I was struggling with homesickness and a little bit of depression. We'd moved from Ohio to Kentucky because of my husband's career, and I was having trouble adjusting. Ohio had been my home for forty years, and I missed my parents, friends, and the familiarity of home. (Keep reading)
