Good evening. It takes a lot to steal a scene from the talented Andrew Scott, star of the new Netflix miniseries Ripley. But the beautiful Italian locations which provide a backdrop to the hit drama have been giving the Irish actor a run for his money. Shot in black and white, the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr Ripley has been hailed as a “masterclass in cinematography” with an influx of visitors anticipated for the Amalfi coastline where much of the action is set. “Set jetting” is not a new phenomenon, but in this age of social media, a tourism boost can quickly snowball into something less desirable. After Ripley was released, Airbnb said it had seen a 93% increase in bookings to Atrani, which stands in for the fictional village of Mongibello in the series. In summer the coast road between Positano and Salerno is famous for its traffic jams and space is at a premium on the small public beaches which fringe the bay. As Liz Boulter reports, some business owners are concerned that tiny Atrani will struggle to cope with a big influx of extra visitors in high season. According to a trend report from Expedia in 2023, around two-thirds of travellers said they had considered visiting a destination after seeing it featured on screen in a TV series or film. While a cameo role in a blockbuster movie can provide a welcome boost for destinations which have the infrastructure to cope, the sheer numbers reached by global streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime could easily contribute to overcrowding. As one local accommodation owner explained: “This coast is saturated with overtourism. If more visitors come because of the series, I sincerely hope they come in low season.” | Andy Pietrasik Head of Travel |
