A Teen Residential Program and Community Counseling Center

September 2019 E-News

Sixteen representatives from the Counseling Departments at Pickens and Gilmer County Schools visited our campus for a luncheon on September 19, 2019. We were grateful for the opportunity to show them our appreciation for the services they provide to the students in our community and to explore ways that we can continue to partner with them in providing services for students who may benefit from The Joy House Counseling Center and Residential Program. Everyone had a wonderful time of fellowship and enjoyed a delicious meal which included some of Ms. Pam's famous soups. We look forward to hosting this group again in 2020.

Joy House Teacher Shares Insight from Eagle Ranch Workshop

By: Robin Whitaker, Joy House Academy Teacher

Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Fortnite, Minecraft—any of these sound familiar? How about Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat? If not, google them on the cell phone. Video games, social media, and cell phones are no longer novelties; in fact, they are now practically embedded in our culture. Our first impression of all these was likely that they were incredible communication devices at best and harmless entertainment at worst. However, the data regarding the effects of interactive screens on our children are now coming in, and the result are downright scary.

At Eagle Ranch this month, the Joy House staff was updated on this data by Melanie Hempe, retired RN, author, and founder of Families Managing Media and Screen Strong. Motivated by her oldest son’s initial interest in video games to his final gaming addiction that led to strife in the family and his dropping out of college, she began to research the science behind interactive screens and the effect that they have, especially on young brains. What she found is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The touch of fall I felt this Friday night at my son’s high school football game has me looking forward to our 13th Annual Golf Tournament. We’ve enjoyed a great tournament these last couple of years. This event is pivotal in allowing us to continue making a difference in the lives of those we serve. We would love to have more of you join us in this difference making day, while also enjoying a wonderful day on the golf course. Let me share with you a few more details.

We have four very reasonably priced high-level sponsorships remaining. Each of these includes a team entry and some great promotion for your business. We have our Putting and Chipping Contest sponsorships available at $1500 along with two Beverage Cart sponsorships at $1000. We already have 20 teams signed up for this year’s tourney, but we would love to make it to 30. We have our Corporate Team Sponsorship available for $600 which gets you a team entry and a Tee Sign with a full-color company logo.

Counselor's Corner: Bitter-Sweet

By: Bill Wattenbarger, PhD

In life, things happen. These events may be physical, material, relational, social or even spiritual but in every case, the first response to these experiences is emotional and comes in two flavors: sweet or bitter. We evaluate events as good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant, desirable or undesirable. We enjoy the sweetness and desire more. We seek to reduce or eliminate bitterness. We can manage mere annoyances and everyday challenges. We can treat them, adapt or just persevere. These connote some degree of overcoming.

Extreme or persistent bitterness is harder to deal with. In severe times we may deny the reality. We may hope against hope that the suffering will end soon and things will be set right. We may blame the wrong thing or person. But when reality sets in, we start asking the big questions. Why is this happening? What is this supposed to mean? What good is there in my suffering?
