Ninety-six yearsNinety-six years after the death of the central figure in the U.S. Supreme Court's "separate but equal" ruling, a pardon is in the works. The Louisiana Pardon Board voted today to recommend a pardon for Homer Plessy, a Creole man of color convicted in the 1800s of refusing to leave a train car set aside for White people.
Audit soughtThe state's top school board wants a deeper look into contracts between the Louisiana Department of Education and a former official with the East Baton Parish School District. The head of the board says there's no actual evidence of wrongdoing, but that the audit is needed as a precautionary measure.
