The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Kelly P. Kissel | Metro editor

The weekend is approaching. Before we get there, check out some of our top headlines:

Ninety-six years

Ninety-six years after the death of the central figure in the U.S. Supreme Court's "separate but equal" ruling, a pardon is in the works. The Louisiana Pardon Board voted today to recommend a pardon for Homer Plessy, a Creole man of color convicted in the 1800s of refusing to leave a train car set aside for White people.

Audit sought

The state's top school board wants a deeper look into contracts between the Louisiana Department of Education and a former official with the East Baton Parish School District. The head of the board says there's no actual evidence of wrongdoing, but that the audit is needed as a precautionary measure.

Feel the burn

Santa Claus will have his traditional guide into south Louisiana next month. St. James Parish officials say coronavirus rates have fallen enough that they'll approve levee bonfires again this year.

Have a good weekend.
