Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Dana Bash

Washington state’s two major candidates for the Senate don’t have much in common. But one trait they apparently do share is a penchant for ducking questions from Dana Bash.

In separate interviews on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday,Bash pressed both Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and her Republican opponent Tiffany Smiley after they attempted to give her the runaround when confronted with inconvenient questions.

Smiley was up first, and Bash asked her to state that President Joe Biden was legitimately elected.

“Yes, he’s our president,” Smiley said. “And to be clear, I think in 2016 Hillary Clinton had concerns [about election integrity]. Stacey Abrams had concerns. This is an issue on both sides of the aisle. This isn’t a Democrat or Republican issue."

Smiley tried to filibuster some more, but an unsatisfied Bash cut her off and continued to ask if Biden won the election legitimately.

Not to be outdone, Murray — in the very next segment — refused to state a clear position on her party’s highly-criticized practice of elevating election-denying Republicans in primary races because they are thought to be easier opponents for Democrats to defeat in general elections.

"That sounded like a yes," Bash concluded after Murray gave several long-winded responses to her questions on the practice.

MEDIA LOSER:
Jeanine Pirro

In November 2020, a Fox News producer sounded the alarm on the false election claims being made on the network, particularly calling out host Jeanine Pirro and urging she not be put back on the air.

NPR’s David Folkenflik first reported on the producer’s email, which appears to have been leaked from the discovery of evidence acquired by Dominion voting systems – the company suing Fox News and its parent company for $1.6 billion in damages.

Pirro has since been made a co-host on cable news’s most-watched show The Five.

A Fox News spokesperson argued to NPR that at the time Fox News hosts “were covering the most newsworthy story of that period — the president of the United States claiming election fraud.”

Additionally, Dan Webb, Fox News’ attorney on the Dominion lawsuit, also argued that Fox News was covering Trump’s allegations.

Pirro, however, did not just cover the story, but flagged Dominion of being "allegedly capable of flipping votes," on November 14th, 2020 -- the same day Fox News officially called the election for President Joe Biden.

It's bad enough that Pirro embraced Trump's stolen election claims, and is one of the hosts targeted by a lawsuit against Fox News for enabling those lies. The fact that a Fox News producer was sounding the alarm on her being on the air is very bad.

Trump's 'big win'

US District Judge Aileen Cannon approved former President Donald Trump’s request for a special master, or a neutral third party, to pore over thousands of classified documents seized from his home last month.

Cannon wrote that the special master will review “the seized property for personal items and documents and potentially privileged material subject to claims of attorney-client and/or executive privilege.”

Trump’s attorneys will work with the DOJ to create a list of possible candidates, which must be submitted by Friday.

The appointment of the special master will temporarily snag part of the government’s investigation into classified documents found in Trump’s possession on Aug. 8.

Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy argued that the Trump Team scored a "big win" with Cannon's decision.

“If it turned out they are privileged, that could taint the prosecutors who reviewed them and it could also taint their investigation because they are now conducting an investigation,” McCarthy said on Fox News Live.

New York Times correspondent and CNN analyst Maggie Haberman also called the special master ruling "striking."

"She ignores the fact that the search warrant that existed, another magistrate signed off on, approved of, because he found overwhelming evidence of probable cause that there were potential crimes being committed," she said on Tuesday's edition of CNN's New Day.

Swing and a (very fortunate) miss

Minnesota Twins outfielder Gilberto Celestino has struck out 60 times this season. But on Sunday, he uncorked one swing-and-a-miss for which he was surely grateful — and so was his teammate.

In the bottom of the 8th inning of Sunday’s contest with the Chicago White Sox, Celestino — standing in the on deck circle — took a practice swing right as his teammate, Twins catcher Gary Sanchez, was walking in front of him.

And it just missed.

Watch the scary moment here.
