Lawmakers have finally come up with a deal (in principle) that could avert another government shutdown, but it doesn’t include what President Trump demanded for his wall. Now, the question becomes: Will the president sign it, even after several conservative figures have come out vocally against it? Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Tuesday he plans to hold a vote on the Green New Deal — an apparent effort to put Democrats, including several presidential contenders, on record supporting an environmental plan that Republicans say is a politically damaging overreach. NBC's Benjy Sarlin reports: The Green New Deal, backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., is nonbinding, meaning it would not have the force of law even it passed and were signed by the president. In other news: Rapper 21 Savage was released on bond from a detention center in Georgia on Tuesday, more than a week after he was detained by immigration authorities. One of the rapper's lawyers said on MSNBC's "The Beat with Ari Melber" that his celebrity helps put a face on the plight of immigration detainees. Will another government shutdown be averted? Watch MSNBC for the latest. We will also be looking at news from a scheduled sealed hearing in Paul Manafort's case. A judge could make a decision that could affect Manafort's sentencing in March. |
