Seeing Good Friday Afresh | | This week, I overheard my 8-year-old daughter giving her 3-year-old sister a primer on Good Friday. She explained it as the day “when God died.” I thought about interjecting (while she was technically right, the statement begged for some qualifiers). But the conversation moved on. Later, I realized that her short, blunt statement helped me see Good Friday afresh. After all, God the Son did die on that dark day. And though it was an awful moment, as Christians it’s something for which we’ll be (literally) eternally grateful. It’s a theme theologian Jarvis J. Williams explores in this article: John 3:16: So Loved, So Familiar. He explains why “we need fresh eyes for our faith’s basic teachings, no matter how long we’ve studied the Bible.” Now that we’re officially in Spring, it’s time to start thinking about summer.
