2021 M&A Review

2021 was an exceptional year for M&A activity with over $3 trillion of announced deals in North America, 72% higher than 2020. While nearly all industries experienced increased deal values and volumes, the pandemic has driven particularly robust demand and valuations for certain (sub)sectors such as healthcare and technology.

Q4 2021 M&A Update

Q4 2021 saw ~1,200 completed deals compared to ~900 in Q4 2020 as buyers continue to rapidly complete deals utilizing readily available capital at historically low costs, supporting strong valuation multiples.

2022 M&A Outlook

Interest rates are expected to remain below historical averages through 2022 despite increasing inflation. As a result, the positive factors which supported M&A activity in 2021 are expected to persist through 2022.

The Increasing Influence of ESG on M&A

Environmental, Social, and Governance ("ESG") considerations are becoming increasingly important to M&A activity and the due diligence process as purchasers seek investments that are both profitable and address ESG factors that increase the transaction's overall strategic value.
