1. SHOOTINGS OCCUR AT TWO FAMILY FESTIVALS: There were shootings at two family-friendly festivals in the United States this weekend. On Saturday, one man was killed and 11 were injured at the Old Timers festival in Brooklyn. On Sunday, three people died and 11 were injured at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California. CNN: “The Old Timers event in Brooklyn's Brownsville neighborhood features local artists and musicians. A few thousand people were attending, N.Y.P.D. Commissioner James O'Neill said. … The Gilroy Garlic Festival usually attracts 100,000 attendees and is peaceful and family-friendly. It's a time where the Gilroy community of about 58,000 comes together each year. ‘For over four decades that festival has been our annual family reunion,’ festival executive director Brian Bowe said Sunday. ‘To have seen this event end this way this day is just one of the most tragic and sad things that I've ever had to see.’” 2. WOODSTOCK 50 MOVES TO MARYLAND AND WILL REPORTEDLY OFFER FREE TICKETS: Woodstock 50’s months-long saga continues with reports that the festival will offer a limited number of free tickets. After failing to find a venue in Upstate New York, the festival has moved to Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. It’s unclear who will perform at the event, as the festival released all artists, including Jay-Z and John Fogerty, from their contracts. The event is slated for August 16. TMZ: “Our sources say the show will now be billed as a benefit concert ... and those who are able to snag seats are encouraged to donate to their favorite causes. … As for how Woodstock plans to make money to pay for event employees and other costs? We're told V.I.P. tickets will still be sold at a cost in an effort to bridge the gap between expenses and profit.” 3. ARBY’S IS BRINGING A FOOD TRUCK TO AREA 51: Around two million people RSVP’d to a viral Facebook event encouraging them to raid Area 51 on September 20 and, whether or not they will show up, Arby’s will be there. The fast-food brand is using the caper's buzz to take its food truck on a 2,000-mile road trip from the company’s Atlanta headquarters to the Nevada Air Force facility. Arby’s plans to offer free food from a secret menu for those who show up. Adweek: “While the military has issued ominous warnings to anyone thinking of actually taking part in a raid—ostensibly to find evidence of alien life being hidden by the government—most internet denizens understand that the whole thing is a joke, and several brands have tried to join in the fun. … But will these brands actually be there when the crowd arrives? Probably not. Only Arby’s seems to realize that 80 percent of raiding a top-secret federal facility is showing up.” |
