If there’s one thing we’ve learned through three weeks, the New Orleans Saints have a defense that’s good enough to keep them in the playoff hunt. The Saints (2-1) topped the Patriots 28-13 on Sunday in New England, thwarting any shot of a rally with a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a Taysom Hill TD run with 2:37 remaining. Saints QB Jameis Winston turned in a generally solid performance, but he has yet to throw for over 150 yards in a game this season. He completed 13 of 21 passes for 128 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions on Sunday. While Saints fans can take a sigh of relief that Winston rebounded from his woeful performance against Carolina, there will be plenty of buzz this week about the former Florida State star continuing to make some dangerous throws. His 7-yard TD toss to Marquez Callaway in the second quarter was as risky as they come, but it’s a good sign that the ball is bouncing the right way for Winston headed into next week’s home opener against the winless New York Giants. The Saints’ defense proved opportunistic, picking off rookie QB Mac Jones three times and limiting the Patriots to 300 yards of offense. Demario Davis and Marshon Lattimore, who is back after missing one week after a thumb injury, were outstanding. Also, the return of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson proved a nice boost for the Saints. As long as the major pieces are on the field, the Saints seem to have a winning recipe three games into the season. |
