Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Suzanne Scott

Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott is set to hold a quarterly address with employees today. The meeting comes after she received a hearty vote of confidence form the Fox Corp. overlords in the form of a fresh multi-year contract.

Her good week comes at the end of some grim months. In January, rumors and reports were Scott's job was in jeopardy over dipping ratings after the election and some vocal migration of viewers to more fringe right wing networks like OAN. Fox pushed back, calling it "wishful thinking" by competitors.

But things didn’t exactly get better for Fox. The network has dropped to third in most ratings metrics, as CNN and MSNBC dominate. Fox also got slapped with a $2.7 billion lawsuit for airing election lies, and had to cancel Lou Dobbs.

Still, there are signs that the ratings are normalizing (Fox’s prime time slate has been performing well in post-inauguration ratings). And a splashy new contract means Scott is here to stay.

“Suzanne’s stellar leadership and business acumen is evident across FOX News Media," said Fox Corp. chief Lachlan Murdoch. "Suzanne’s track record of success, innovative spirit and dedication to excellence make her the ideal person to continue to lead and grow FOX News."

“I am grateful to Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch for the opportunity to continue leading FOX News Media and positioning all of our platforms for future success,” says Scott.

MEDIA LOSER:
Bruce Castor

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham started her show by briefly telling Sean Hannity he was being too charitable about attorney Bruce Castor’s “terrible” performance on the first day of the Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.

Ingraham was referring to Hannity's interview in the previous hour with Castor's fellow Trump attorney David Schoen, during which he described Castor's presentation as "meandering." By far, the most mild criticism of the day for Castor.

Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, for example, trashed the entire defense team, and Castor in particular, as being "disorganized" and "random" and said the House managers presented a much better case. Attorney Alan Dershowitz said he couldn't even figure out what the heck Castor was doing.

Mediaite founder and ABC chief legal analyst Dan Abrams said some of  Castor and Schoen's arguments were "legal gobbledegook."

Most importantly, Trump himself was reportedly "furious" with their performance.

Castor was so specifically bad at what he was doing that he sparked a trending Twitter topic that continues into today. Even his defense of his defense wasn't great.

You really can't have done worse for yourself when the spectrum of critics covers not just both sides of the aisle, but your actual client.

IMPEACHMENT DAY TWO

Democratic impeachment managers will up the ante on their jaw-dropping presentation from day one of former President Donald Trump’s Senate impeachment trial by showing never-before-seen footage from inside the Capitol insurrection.

On Wednesday morning, PBS NewsHour White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor was among several journalists to report that day two will feature new, not previously aired video.

National Anthem

The Dallas Mavericks have ceased playing the national anthem before home games at the American Airlines Center, owner Mark Cuban confirmed on Tuesday, and will maintain that.

MATH

Andrew Yang is leading polls against his Democratic mayoral contenders in both popularity and name recognition, according to a recent poll commissioned by lobbying group Fontas Advisors conducted by Core Decision Analytics.

Banned for Life

Twitter executive Ned Segal said Wednesday the company would not allow former President Donald Trump to return to the platform, even if he runs for the presidency and wins in 2024.

Mulligan?

Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee is facing stiff backlash over a comment he made on Fox News, but did he really say that ex-President Donald Trump deserves a “mulligan” for inciting the Capitol insurrection?

We report, you decide.

Nosedive

Support for the Republican party is tumbling — leading to a sizable favorability gap between the GOP and the Democrats for the first time in nearly a decade.

According to a new poll by Gallup, support for the Republican party has dipped sharply since November — down 6 points overall. And the drop is coming almost exclusively from within. Republicans gave their own party a 90 percent favorability rating in November. But that number is now down to 78 percent.

The result is that, for the first time since the 2013 government shutdown, there is a double digit split in favorability between the two major parties, according to Gallup. Democrats checked in with a 48 percent approval rating in the survey, giving them an 11 point advantage over the GOP. That number represents a high water mark for the Democrats over the past eight years.

Lachlan Murdoch Sends Surprising Signal of Fox News’ Future Editorial Direction: ‘We Don’t Need to Go Further Right’ - And It's a Smart Move
OPINION

Monday was rather significant in the history of Fox News, and not just because CEO Suzanne Scott signed the multi-year agreement to stay on as leader, nabbing today's coveted Green Room Media Winner spot.

In an earnings call that followed that announcement, Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch offered insights on how he felt Fox News could best return to the ratings dominance that has marked the past two decades.

For some crucial context, one needs to first recognize that while all media outlets have struggled to figure out how best to draw viewers in a post-Trump era, no outlet has been hit harder than Fox News. The month of January was a relative mess for a variety of reasons, from poor ratings to a serious lawsuit.

Lachlan Murdoch’s comments on where the network goes from here —and his specific assessment of the current cable news ecosystem — are very revealing about the future of cable news, and perhaps national political discourse for the coming years.

"Right Up My Rectum"

The lawyer for Jacob Chansley, more commonly known as the “QAnon Shaman,” made a bold offer in an interview when asked to respond to evidence that his client, charged with storming the Capitol building on Jan. 6, is a “leader” of the QAnon movement.

Go ahead, guess.
