Thomas Ashton Institute annual lecture: Work, health, and wellbeing post-pandemic

HSE research reports: major accident hazard pipelines (MAHPs) modelling

New research reports on MAHPs now available

MAHPs, such as the natural gas network, have the potential to harm people in the event of an unplanned release of a dangerous substance.

As a statutory consultee for Land Use Planning applications in the vicinity of MAHPs, HSE provides advice aimed at mitigating the potential harmful effects in the event of an incident. We use a quantified risk assessment approach which uses mathematical models of potential hazards and their consequences.

HSE runs an ongoing research programme to assess the suitability of these models.

Research Report 1186: Failure rates for above ground major accident hazard pipelines outside above ground installations
This report describes a methodology to estimate failure rates for pipelines that are above ground and outside installations.It also describes the software application developed for use of the failure rate methodology within HSE.
Research Report 1187: Jet fire mathematical models for failure of pipelines carrying flammable substances1) Literature Review
Research Report 1188: 2) Model Performance
A jet fire is one of the potential hazards for releases from pipelines transporting flammable substances. These reports describe research on the suitability of jet fire mathematical models for use by HSE to estimate the physical dimensions of potential fires.
