Scary night for Russell Gage

There have been plenty of reminders recently about how rough and dangerous the NFL is.

We got another one Monday night, this time sadly involving former LSU Tiger Russell Gage.

Just two weeks after the Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field against the Cincinnati Bengals, Gage went down with a likely concussion and neck injuries in his Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 31-41 NFL playoff loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Gage had to be carted off during the game's closing moments in Tampa. Preliminary indications were good, but please check back with our website for more updates.

Speaking of injuries, the LSU gymnastics team had to bounce back and compete Monday, less than three days after star gymnast Kiya Johnson was loss for the season Friday at Kentucky with a torn left Achilles' tendon. That the Tigers had to come back and compete at home against No. 1 Oklahoma made things even tougher.

Led by All-American and former NCAA champion Haleigh Bryant, the Tigers posted a gutsy effort. No, they didn't win, but sometimes coming close and doing your best in gymnastics is good enough. Monday's 197.600-197.450 loss to the Sooners qualifies.

Check out my recap of the meet and also please check out our photo gallery from Monday's action.

The LSU women's basketball team keeps reaching new heights. Monday, the 18-0 Tigers climbed to No. 3 in the AP poll, their highest ranking since February 2006. Despite all that heady success, coach Kim Mulkey says her LSU team hasn't accomplished anything yet. They play again at home Thursday against Arkansas.

On the men's side, forward Mwani Wilkinson is out for the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery. Wilkinson was reduced to a reserve role, but it's a blow to their depth that the Tigers don't need. LSU hosts Auburn on Wednesday night.

Finally, on a lighter note (or perhaps a more filling note), with the Saints out of the playoffs a local bakery is putting a Cincinnati Bengals spin on one of its king cake versions in honor of Bengals and former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. Click on the delicious link here.

Thanks for subscribing and reading our LSU content. You're the reason we do all this. That and the king cakes.

Until next time,

Scott Rabalais
