Something smells: Renegade fruit shuts down German post office The durian is often considered a culinary wonder. Dubbed “The King of Fruits” by enthusiasts, durians occupy a unique niche in south-east Asian cuisine, and can even be dangerous to gather due to their weight and spiny exterior. But above all, durians are famous for one thing in particular: their absolutely vile stench. Due to the high amount of phosphates in the fruit’s flesh, it emits an odor described by some as “fishy” or “corpse-like.” The fruit is pungent enough, in fact, that an entire German post office was evacuated after a package was opened for inspection. The smell was so bad that six workers ended up in the hospital for nausea, while the remaining 60 workers were asked to clear the building. Thankfully, police and firefighters determined there was no biohazard present, just one stinky fruit and poor ventilation. Believe it or not, you can find durians on sale here in the states. But some other fruits are much rarer. Tap or click here to see some of the most beautiful fruits and vegetables you’ve never heard of. → |
