Saying the 'M' word as COVID cases climb

By Bob Warren

Mask recommendation: COVID cases are rising again (I know) and this morning the city’s health director recommended folks put the masks back on indoors. No mandate issued at this point, mind you. But, Dr. Jennifer Avegno said, “The virus isn’t going away.”

Also on the COVID front, the Biden administration cleared the way for more free home tests. And the FDA has cleared the booster shot for kids 5 to 11 years old.

Aquarium makeover: One of the city’s best-known attractions is getting a big facelift. Big as in $41 million. The newly-named Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium will put bugs and fish on nearly equal footing at the Aquarium site on the river near the foot of Canal Street, Tony McAuley reports.

Bad arrest: Perhaps the highest-profile unsolved homicide in St. Tammany Parish, the shooting death of Nanette Krentel, continues to make waves. The latest? A federal judge has ruled that the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office wrongly arrested a man who criticized the effectiveness of the sheriff’s investigators.

Restoring a landmark: The restoration of the amazing St. Roch Cemetery Chapel is complete. (You can read some background here.) Our photo editor David Grunfeld spent some time at the 146-year-old chapel Saturday and has these fantastic pictures from the historic holy site.

Hope you enjoyed today’s Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us. And of course, be sure to check out NOLA.com for more news throughout the day.
