TODAY'S TOP STORY Itβs time to revisit your cord-cutting options I did the math, and Iβm paying $83 more a month now to watch TV than I was paying for cable. Is it worth it? I like the convenience of not being tied to a grid, and many of the original shows are terrific. (Speaking of, I just finished watching βMasters of the Air.β You def need to watch that on Apple TV+.) Itβs no wonder the streaming services are all competing to add live programming. YouTube TV picked up the NFL, Amazon pays $1 billion a year for Thursday Night Football, and Netflix is spending more money than you can fit in a wrestling ring for WWE. Things have changed a heck of a lot since we all ditched cable years ago. I dug through the latest Consumer Reports comparison to figure out which streaming services are worth your money today β and what theyβre still missing. Maybe youβll find a new goβto. For the Disney adults: Hulu + Live TV Huluβs live TV bundle is slightly pricier (especially if you want to go ad-free) but includes a ton of original content and a backlog of shows and movies YouTube TV doesnβt have. Itβll run you $77 to $90 a month, ads or not. What you get: 75 channels: Including major broadcast channels (ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC). Cable highlights: A&E, BET, CN, CNN, Disney, Fox News, FX, HGTV, TBS and TNT. Sports: CBS Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports and some regional sports networks. Cloud DVR: It has unlimited storage for up to nine months. Content library: Hulu original series and a streaming library of movies and shows. Bonus: ESPN+ and Disney+ are included, which is sweet if you have kids at home or visiting. What's missing: Some sports: MLB Network, NBA TV and NFL Network. Some news: BBC America, PBS and some NBC programs. Feel-good favorites: Like AMC and Hallmark. Other streaming add-ons: No option to add Max. If you just want the basics: Sling TV Sling TV is the cheapest by far, with a basic plan going for about half of Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV. Cost? $40 for each basic plan below or $55 for both. But Sling nickels and dimes for additional channels and DVR storage. Not a fan of the sneaky pricing. What you get: Sling Orange: If you want entertainment and sports, you get 32 channels, including Disney and ESPN, A&E, the Food Network and TBS, but no broadcast TV. Sling Blue: This is Slingβs news option, with 39 channels, including Fox News, MSNBC and CNN, plus local broadcasts and regional sports. What's missing: Major networks: ABC, Fox and NBC in some markets. On-demand channels: Like CBS and NBC. Unlimited DVR: Only 50 hours of free cloud storage. Some bundling options: You can't add Max here, either. For the football heads: YouTube TV If youβre worried about missing the game, YouTube TV is your best bet. Itβs got the most comprehensive cable and sports coverage for a comparable price to other streamers, at $73 a month. What you get: Over 100 channels: This includes all major broadcast networks and most cable channels. Cable highlights: BET, CNN, Comedy Central, Fox News, MTV, MSNBC, Nickelodeon and Paramount Network. Sports: CBS Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports, and MLB, NBA and NFL league networks. Cloud DVR: With unlimited storage for up to nine months. NFL Sunday Ticket: Pay around $350 per season for out-of-market Sunday games. What's missing: Some popular cable channels: A&E, DIY Network, History Channel and Lifetime. Original content: Youβll need to purchase things like Paramount+ and Max as add-ons (they offer some bundling discounts). Or go the hardware route Streaming devices are easy to use (just plug one into your TV) and give you access to free content and all the apps you subscribe to. They generally work better than the built-in options on newer TVs and are a must if your TV is even a few years old. Amazon Fire TV Cube if you already use Alexa ($140). Roku Streaming Stick 4K+ is super user-friendly ($47 on sale). Google Chromecast with Google TV for Android peeps ($47 on sale). Apple TV 4K is for the Apple lover (from $129 to $149). π What did Master Yoda say when he saw himself on a 4K TV? "HDMI." |
DEALS OF THE DAY Little green gadgets Like literally green, not βgreen.β For fun! Long-range green laser pointer. Bet Abby would love to chase this light β dogs prefer green to red! Herb scissors for quick-snipping green onions, chives and other herbs. I used mine today to put basil in my soup! Bright green collapsible kitchen funnels you can find easily in a drawer. Neon-green fishhook knot-tying safety tool β no more hooks in your hands! Magnetic charging station in a vibrant emerald shade. Who says these have to be boring? |
WEB WATERCOOLER π₯ Chew on this: TikTok's CEO, Shou Chew, wants you to βmake your voice heardβ against the looming Communist China app ban. He says creators and small businesses could lose billions. Donβt worry about Americansβ data going straight to Communist China. Putz. There's absolutely no question this constitutes lobbying Congress on behalf of a foreign government. 15 million views on a Hitler video: On X, a user uploaded a colorized, edited video of Hitler's 1939 Reichstag speech, complete with an AI English translation. Hereβs the shocker β the video is getting loads of sympathetic replies from folks saying Hitler sounded reasonable. A false revision of history is dangerous. I shouldnβt have to say this. π² High-tech theft: With an eSIM, you no longer need to swap SIM cards to transfer to a new phone. All you have to do is make a QR code. Nice, but bad guys are breaking into online mobile accounts to transfer numbers to their devices. Set up a unique PIN or passcode with your carrier thatβs required for any changes to your account or SIM swaps. π€ No denying this Tex appeal: P*rnhub is now blocked in Texas, with the Texas Attorney General saying it violates the state's new age-verification law that forces adult websites to make sure users are 18 with a government-issued ID. Texas joins a handful of other states where P*rnhub is now blocked. VPN anyone? π Need for speed: The FCC says the new required broadband standard is 100Mbps for downloads and 20Mbps for uploads. Thatβs a big jump from the old 25Mbps for downloads and 3Mbps for uploads. Hereβs a reality check: 45 million Americans donβt have access to either high-speed internet or a decent mobile service. |

SUNDAY TO-DO LIST π Listen: To the sounds of space. NASAβs sonification of space data makes for some trippy listening. Five stars! Pop: Virtual bubble wrap. Itβs nearly as satisfying as the real thing. Upgrade: With Gaffers tape, which is basically duct tape without the residue. I hear it has many devout adherents. Bake: A five-minute baguette. Faster and tastier than a trip to the bakery. Drink: Apple cider vinegar to keep the doctor away. A new study found drinking approximately 1 to 3 teaspoons mixed in water three times a day lowers blood glucose levels and blood lipids. How βbout them apples? |
WHAT THE TECH? One green beer and these fish are tanked. |
UNTIL NEXT TIME ... The answer: B.) 13 million pints of Guinness will be consumed today. If you canβt make it to a pub, get that same famous creamy texture at home. How? A little plastic ball slowly releases nitrogen gas after you pop open the can, replicating the draught experience. SlΓ‘inte! Thatβs cheers in Irish, and you pronounce it slawnβche. Use that today!
