| | WorldSBK testing a positive omen for cracking 2020 |
| Pre-season testing has already been a cracking affair for world superbikes, signalling nothing short of a bar-banging kick-off when the world circuit travels to Australia for the opening round of the 2020 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, Yamaha Finance round at Phillip Island from February 28 until March 1. Four days of intense on-track activity during November in Spain has set the foundations for an ultra-competitive 2020 and, while defending five-time world champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) is clearly still the rider to beat with his speed, zest and unerring consistency, he now has new and rejuvenated competition zeroing in from all quarters. Rea happy with testing Rea was the fastest in the two-day outing at Jerez, with three of the next four riders on Yamahas – starting with the company’s new signing Toprak Razgatlioglu in second, followed by Michael van der Mark in third and then Frenchman Loris Baz in fifth, rediscovering the form which saw him a WorldSBK race winner in 2012 and 2013. Toprak Razgatlioglu joins Yamaha Rea’s new teammate Alex Lowes also impressed in fourth, while the factory Ducati of Scott Redding and Chaz Davies, as well as the BMWs of Tom Sykes and Eugene Laverty, were also inside the top 10. Redding has replaced Spaniard Alvaro Bautista at Ducati after winning the 2019 British superbike title. Ducati new boy, Scott Redding..inside the top 10 in Jerez test Eugene Laverty with BMW for 2020 Which begs the question: where have Bautista and his new teammate (and former Kawasaki rider) Leon Haslam been? The pair will race the completely revamped Honda CBR1000RR-R SP in 2020, but plan to test privately and not reveal their hand – or their speed – till they arrive in Australia for the final pre-season test from February 24 and 25. Honda will race the all-new Honda CBR1000RR-R SP in 2020 Also missing-in-action over the testing period is Japanese superbike champion Honda veteran Takumi Takahashi, who will make his full-time WorldSBK debut as part of a satellite Honda team. The all-new Honda CBR1000RR-R SP boasts a 26 horsepower improvement over the old model, and has the latest electronics and streamlined fairing. The implication is clear: Honda’s serious about getting back to the pointy end of the WorldSBK grid after a sustained period of mediocrity. And the rejuvenation could start from the get-go at Phillip Island with Bautista a class act at the island– he won all three races in 2019; and Haslam also collecting island wins in his career – back in 2010 and 2015. Leon Haslam moves to Honda with Alvaro Bautista for 2020 |

| | | Meanwhile, the unflappable Rea was delighted with his outing at Jerez. Rea... unflappable “Normally at the end of a busy season it is easy to get lost but we focused on quality rather than quantity,” said Rea. “We did a lot of back-to-back testing of things we had ideas to try out during the year. The biggest thing was in my riding position on the bike and getting used to the rear brake lever on the handlebar, plus some different engine braking. “The track was compromised a bit but I still feel that we did a really good job at this test, both with our outright pace and also consistency. We are where we should be and I am really happy to sign off on an incredible 2019.” Jonathan Rea with new Kawasaki team mate, Alex Lowes |

| A week earlier, Rea elected to sit out the second day of a hitout at Aragon, with the WorldSBK rookie, Redding, taking full advantage to come out on top ahead of Davies, Lowes and Razgatlioglu. Scott Redding fastest in Aragon As well as Redding, GRT Yamaha pair Garrett Gerloff and WorldSSP runner-up Federico Caricasulo have also impressed as rookies during Spanish testing, while Xavi Fores (Puccetti Kawasaki) is settling back into the WorldSBK scene with ease after a year away. The well-credentialled Gerloff hails from Texas and his honour board includes double MotoAmerica Supersport champion and four-time MotoAmerica Superbike race winner. Beware, this Texan is race-sharp!
