Samsung's Verizon deal means it has chosen the US in Huawei stoush; Google's Silva rehashes tired arguments in bid to avoid mandatory media code; Optus in bid to lure broadband users with new NBN plans

Google has come out of the blocks firing early in the week, with the company's Australia and New Zealand managing director Melanie Silva penning another op-ed for that friend of commercial entities, the Australian Financial Review, trying to again argue the case for the company not to be tied down by a mandatory code that governs payments to news publishers in this country.


Speculation that South Korean conglomerate Samsung Electronics would come to the aid of beleaguered Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei Technologies and help it to obtain semiconductors for its business has been more or less squashed after Samsung was given a massive deal by Verizon.
Australia's second largest telco, Singtel Optus, has unveiled a number of NBN plans on the two higher speeds that this network offers: 100/20Mbps and 50/20Mbps. Ho-hum - 5G anyone?
