The Lunch Line: Saints' Michael Thomas to miss start of season, and more Rolling Stones

By Bob Warren

Some sports news to start us off today. The Olympics have begun in Tokyo. And closer to home, it appears that Saints superstar Michael Thomas will miss the start of the season due to an injury.

Thomas, who was plagued by an ankle injury last season, had surgery in June, media reports out today are saying. Ouch! As for the Olympics, we’ve got everything you need to know about the local athletes competing in Japan.

Schools and COVID: If you have a kid in school you’re no doubt keeping an eye on those surging COVID numbers. Classes open across the metro in a few weeks after all. Masks? No masks? Renewed social distancing requirements? A lot of those questions are still unanswered.

Vaccines and the law: A north Louisiana medical school that requires its students to get the vaccine is in State Attorney General Jeff Landry’s crosshairs. Landry has threatened to sue the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Monroe. Across Louisiana, Andrea Gallo reports, universities are grappling with whether they can mandate vaccines.

Speaking of, cartoonist Walt Handelsman notes that U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., recently got the stick.

‘Mick said yes.’ By now you’ve surely heard that the Rolling Stones are headed to New Orleans to headline a day at Jazz Fest. But you might be interested in the back story of how that came to be. Sometimes you can get what you want….

Every house has a story: History buff Mike Scott checks in with a story about one of the most notable homes in the city: that impressive mansion at No. 2 Audubon Place. Like a lot of posh New Orleans addresses, this one has quite a history.

Also in the news: It'll be hot as Hades today. Floods one day, heat advisiories the next. Ahh, summer.

All this and much more in today’s Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us.
